Can't Get Down Mine Ladder

When I go into the entry level of the mines, that guy gives me the old / rusty sword and leaves. But then I can't get down the ladder to actually enter the mines. No matter where I stand by it, my character just won't go down. I think I've pressed every button, but nothing. He just stands there.

Do I have to wait for something else to happen, or am I just missing something? How do I make my character descend the ladder? The lift is broken so I can't use that.

You should only need to right-click on the ladder to descend while standing near it; you've said you've hit every button, but just to double-check, have you tried that? Right-click is pretty much your default "use" button in the game.

The lift isn't broken; it just isn't activated until you hit a minimum of Floor Level 5 of the mines. Every 5 levels, it'll record your progress, letting you use the lift to immediately return to that depth.

Sometimes if I am holding (have selected in the main bar) some object to use to do a specific function which interferes with using the ladder I have this problem. Usually I am mindful to select the sword in the main bar before using the ladder and my avatar will use the ladder when I right click on the hole or ladder and swing the sword when I left click.
