Wild trees not growing back
As the title says. I cut down a bunch of wild trees (the ones to the left of the farm and by Robin's house) and they simply aren't growing back. They grow to the first stage, and don't continue to grow. I've waited a long time too--over one season--and there are still no trees. What's going on?

I think they don't grow in winter, if that's what season you were in... but it could just be bad luck. Maybe try killing the saplings and starting anew.

Is there anything right next to them? I don't think trees can grow past a certain point if anything (usually another tree) is right next to them.

The rules for non-fruit tree regrowth are a little strange; especially outside the farms. The wiki says:

---------Growth Rate---------

Once per day, each tree or seed has a 20% chance of growing if it's not already fully-grown, and the season isn't winter (or it's in the Greenhouse). Common trees will not reach full growth if there's a fully-grown non-fruit tree within its 3×3 grid, though it'll still grow to the sapling stage (Stage 4). The median growth time to maturity should be about 18 days, though actual growth times can vary considerably. Statistically, less than 10% of seeds take more than 31 days to reach maturity and less than 1% take more than 46 days.

---------Outside the Farm---------

......If such trees (outside the farm) are chopped down, and the stumps removed, they will respawn as a Stage 3 sapling (20% chance each night) and grow to maturity as normal after that. While these trees will not grow to maturity in winter they will still spawn as a Stage 3 sapling in winter.

Anecdotally I've seen trees get stuck in a juvenile stage a lot longer than I expected, so this definitely holds water. Don't worry -- eventually, they WILL grow (if you're sure you haven't crowded them, keep the 3x3 area around them CLEAR, including even just a dropped seed on the ground, just to be safe). It's just that there's some RNG to the pace.

Anecdotally, I think season transition can bring a lot of change very quickly. For example, late last winter, I planted a big grove of pines, oaks, and maples to the left side of my farm (I wanted to make my own regrowing lumber supply). The majority of these were still saplings on the last day of winter, or had barely just sent up a shoot.

The very next day, I had like a dozen full-grown trees in some of the spots.
