The Silo is a type of farm building purchasable from Robin at the Carpenter's Shop. It takes two days to build. When complete, it stores hay from grass cut on the farm.

And you can always buy hay from Marnie and manually place it in the chicken coop.

If you can buy it, I recommend you to buy an autofeeder from Marnie, so you can store hay in there (Can be bought from Marnie). It saves a lot of time this way instead of manually feeding

You can purchase a silo from Robin. It takes about two days for it to be built. The chickens along with other farm animals cannot die unless you receive a rare cut scene involving a wild animal attack by leaving an animal out during the night. Your animals will not die without food. They will eat grass if any is available to them. They will be unhappy and probably not give you eggs on a regular basis.

A silo is found at the carpenter's shop owned by Robin, it's up in the mountain area near the mines, north of the community center. A silo costs 100 stones, 10 clay, 5 copper bars, and 100G is required as well. A silo can give you hay for a 50% chance when you use your scythe on any grass, (not weeds, you can walk through grass) and using the sword does not work. Also note: Animals never die, you just might not get produce/high quality produce when they lay eggs or have milk/wool ready. If you get a Deluxe Coop/Barn, you can get an autofeed system which saves a lot of time. You can also get Grass Starter from Pierre's for 100G a piece, and grass is good food for them as well as hay.

tl;dr:
100 stones, 10 clay, 5 copper bars, 100G, at the carpenter's shop, or use grass for 100G for a starter or just let it grow out. Animals also never die.
