''no free slots on server'' - we tried EVERYTHING. please help!!

Me and my friend are trying to play in co-op mode but we keep on receiving the same message over and over every time we try: "no free slots on server". We don't wanna start a new farm, we just want to play with our usual farms and characters. Of course we built a cabin before going multiplayer and, when the "no free slots available" appeared we built an extra cabin each but noting changed even if we never played multiplayer before and nobody could have visited us. We tried the "invite only" and the "friends only" options and we cleared the "enable new character creation" box. We tried to search the "farmhand" file to delete it like someone suggested in a similar post but we didnt even find it. We really tried everything but we can't wrap our heads around it. I play via a Windows 10 PC and she plays via iMac and Smapi. Please help!

It may depend on which mods are in use. Also you want to keep the "enable new character creation" box checked.

This sounds as if you're trying to play existing farmers together? You won't both be able to use existing characters. One of you can host an existing farm. The other joins as a farmhand, creating a new character who lives on that farm (which could look exactly like your usual character.)
