1. Stardew Valley can be played as a multiplayer cooperative game with up to 4 players (everyone working towards the goal of building running the farm, etc). This is usually done via internet connection, although you may be able to also play it over a local network - someone else will have to answer that part of it. Or there is more information on the wiki/search.
2. You can play using Steam's new remote play feature. I have not tried that mode yet and do not know specifically how it works for Stardew. So far using remote play with games in my library either one player comes in as an already existing character (e.g., Juicebox in Crashlands), or the game is truly cooperative (or competitive depending on the players involved) because you share the input. "I want to go this way." "Nooooo, I want to go THIS way." I am curious about other players' experience with the remote play mode on this game.
I understand this is not a complete answer, but I hope it helps.
Games that were Started in Multiplayer can be loaded into the Single Player Mode and vice versa.
Friends on Steam can join your Multiplayer Session when you have Build "Homes" for them, one Home represents one additional Slot for a Player to join.
