Did I turn off a tutorial?
I get nothing when starting this game for the first time really. Isn't there something that should pop to tell you "cutting bushes drains energy, sleep in your house" and then walks you through going to sleep. Or maybe just simply tells you to push the X button on a controller to swing a tool?

Did I turn off this feature somehow?

no, there isnt such a hand holding tutorial. everything comes quite naturally, its not really needed in my opinion.
I Kinda Fail Jun 29, 2019 @ 12:27pm
No, it's fairly self explanatory... The energy meter is constantly on screen, and you constantly see it go down as you use your tools. The scythe and other weapons don't use energy, so use those to cut grass. The axe, pickaxe, fishing rod, hoe and watering can all use energy, and you use less energy per usage the higher your level is. Upgrading the tools at the blacksmith also makes them stronger, such as chopping down a tree in 2 hits instead of 15, or watering 18 crops at once instead of 1.

You can watch the TV sometimes for some tips. It tells you about the weather and luck every day, with every few days there being new recipes or advice on TV.

The game is about exploration. It's mostly self explanatory. If you need help, you can ask here or look it up.

I figured the responses would be "I figured it out so you can too"

First time, I passed out because I didn't know how to use the storage/sell box. I kept clicking and nothing would happen. Didn't know what to click. I guess I was using a tool and he passed out. Also didn't know I would be forced to sleep at 2am. And there wasn't anything in-game to explain the 2am rule either.

I just need a few things to help me with the actual mechanics of playing the game to avoid frustration. It magnifies everything if you can't figure out how to open the menu or save the game. I'm sure there's some fun to be had here, but my first experience is pretty bad.

On top of all that, I didn't get credit in the Grand Prix for harvesting plants . . .

Oh and how was I supposed to know I was able to harvest? I kept watering and another player looking over my shoulder told me the crop was ready. Apparently it is supposed to stop you from watering (her words) but that wasn't the case for me.

She also remembered getting some sort of fishing tutorial, but I don't know what I did because I didn't get any explanation about fishing . . .

<sigh>

it has nothing to do with "i figured out so you can too". the game is designed so you are able to figure it out on your own and gives cues when its absolutely neccessary. infact, the game gives a lot of visual cues, you just have to pay attention.

for example when you pay attention to your crops you see it develop until it bears fruit which is an indicator for you to harvest it. furthermore if you hover with your mouse over the plant it shows a little + sign which is an indicator to harvest it.

and yes the first time when you fish you DO get a brief explanation, again, you need to pay attention. you cast your fishing line and when a ! appears above your head you need to click immediately in order to initiate the mini game. minigame = you need to keep the green bar behind the fish for a certain amount of time until the bar fills up.

once you hit 12 o clock at night theres literally a message which says that you are tired and should go to bed soon. once you hit 1 am you get another cue. you get the message for a reason. and once again. pay.attention.

and the shipment box, well. you either hold something in your hand from your action bar and throw it in or click on it and then a separate window opens where you can sell all your stuff.

it all comes down to paying attention. if you really have zero drive to figure anything out by yourself then the game might not be for you. ooooor you should read up everything on the wiki beforehand if you really have to. (but that would spoil most of the things in my opinion)

if you have any questions read up on the wiki or just simply ask. the game is pretty much self explanatory and learning by doing and you wont do everything perfect the first time you do something.
you stayed up to late and passed out? well, you learned to go to bed sooner. or dont wait until the last minute to sell your crops.

After watching me play, my wife thinks I have something turned off. I did not get a fishing tutorial AND I did not get any messages about it getting late.

you did. you just didnt pay attention. its not a permanent message. the message and the tutorial fade after a while.

and your wife is wrong. there is nothing to turn off tutorial wise because there is nothing to turn on in the first place. the game is what it is.

do you want me to make a new save and prove via screenshot that you get a "tutorial" when fishing and the midnight message?

edit: just tested it, you even get cues how to use your tools n stuff and how to move and interact upon creating a character/spawning into your house.

if you want i can get the proof of the fishing tutorial myself but that would take a while so i took one from the internet, its the last picture in the link i believe.

everyone gets those cues, you arent an exception.

Don't give up, you CAN figure things out :~) Mistakes and bumbles are part of it. Look for visual clues, explore your Inventory and Journal, be curious about stuff.
Also, make sure your resolution is letting you see the whole screen. The little tutorial visuals and info messages display briefly on the left edge.

Thanks Lena, I know how to take screenshots too . . .

Here's some screenshots for anyone else encountering this type of problem. On the LEFT side of the screen in this image, you will see movement and "Push Button A" type instructions. I THINK I remember seeing those on screen.

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1785732807

However, when you exit the house, you are supposed to see more instructions. Of course I can't be 100% sure, but I have no memory of these, and I was openly asking my wife how to use a tool while on this screen. Anyway, you should see something like this with "Use Tool" and "Menu" button instructions:

Much like you folks responding, my wife was confused that I was asking how to play. She kept watching me, and when it was nearing 2am, she wondered where my message about "getting late" was AND when I cast my fishing rod for the first time, she was confused why I didn't get any messages on the side of the screen. Here's the "getting late" message. Note that it even plays a sound and the character has Zzzz's above his/her head. Pretty hard to miss.

I THINK what happened is that I tried using the keyboard and mouse on the first screen. I may have even used them before the first message giving me instructions ever appeared. I exited the house for the first time with the controller, but I was moving back and forth between controller and keyboard and I even remapped some keys very early. I think this somehow disabled the pop-ups on the left side of the screen.

Here are the Mouse and Keyboard versions of those first two screens. I had to leave the controller unplugged to get them. I DEFINITELY did not see these:

sooo...problem solved then or do you have any more questions?
wongojack Jun 29, 2019 @ 2:38pm
This is really all I was hoping for, but I somehow messed this up. I'm not sure how to "fix" the problem once it has started. Are there even any more left side instructions besides the fishing? Maybe a few more instructions here and there would be nice like how to change tools with the triggers. . .

I will note that in that first game where I re-mapped things, I re-mapped the "selection" buttons that are supposed to perform the same functions as the mouse clicks. Except, they wouldn't work for every interaction. To progress dialogs and for some other things, I STILL had to click the actual mouse button. A small thing, but it left me a little confused as a new player about how to actually control the game.

Generally, I don't want to have to use personal energy to "self-discover" the basic mechanics of the game. Discovering how to craft advanced items on my own - ok, but discovering how to move through dialog pages - too much.

get over yourself, stop being so petty and condescending. its not me who missed the tutorials and asked for help, i was genuinely trying to help until now.

but fine, i ll play your little game. at least one game you know how to play.

"stop pretending to want help from strangers then if you are unwilling to cooperate and rather stick your fingers into your ears and scream LALALALALA when people are trying to help you and explain things just because you didnt pay attention and managed to miss the tutorials in the first place in a game that is basically idiot proof."

are you happy now? are you entertained? are you finally ready to stop being so full of yourself?

anywho, you can get off your high horse now, or fall off of it for all i care, im done wasting my time with someone who doesnt want help.

have a nice day regardless. :steamfacepalm:

I just tested a new game again. This time,

0) I used the controller and mouse during the game creation.
1) It gave me the first little instructions on the left side in the house (for controller).
2) I then used the mouse and keyboard to walk around the house, watch TV etc.
3) When I exited the house, there were no additional instructions.

These steps apparently trigger the problem I was facing. It wouldn't be so bad, but the threat of suppressing all of the player info messages like "it's getting late" probably makes it a bigger bug than it would be if it only impacted the initial tutorial style messages.

Huh, interesting.. I use controller and mouse/keyboard together throughout the game and have never had the left-side info quit working. In that test, did you play through the day and the zzz bubble and "It's geting late..." notice didn't happen at midnight?
