Stardew Valley

Weird black flashes on top half of screen randomly every few seconds... anyone know a fix?
Could this have something to down with the Steam Overlay maybe?
Whatever it is, it is really annoying... only the top half of the screen does this weird flashing.

3440x1440, 100 Hz.

Sounds like a hardware problem :terminal:

It isn't, only happening in SV, not in any other games.

If it were hardware, it would happen at least in every 3D application, especially those that are actually taxing my RTX 2080.

Stardew Valley is fixed at 60fps, so you're probably getting that screen tearing on account of the framerate mismatch. I've seen people fix it by switching to bordered window mode or adjusting their video card's settings to match the lower rate.

Thanks, that might actually be the case then, especially since I have a GSYNC setup.
Wasn't aware of the fixed framerate.

Will try Borderless then, much appreciated!

Not true.

A while back I was having issue in one game only, while every other game was working fine. Turned out to by my video card overheating, but for some reason only that one game would trigger it, even though it was not by far the most demanding.

Hope the other option mentioned works for you though, although it doesn't sound like screen tearing with only half the screen flashing.

Still true, because it was the software, the game, that had some engine bugs, again software, that caused your GPU to run into its overheat protection threshold.

The fault didn't lie with your GPU, it was the software.

For examply, take the Playstation 4 and PS4 Pro and the exclusive game Horizon: Zero Dawn.

The game runs perfectly fine, with obviously fully functioning console, except for when you leave the world map opened for too long -- why?

Because the developers introduced a coding bug in the engine for that part (and never fixed it) that sets the GPU to boost lock and also has no fps limiter, so the GPU constantly runs at peak boost, eventually running extremely hot.

Still has zero to do with the hardware, still is fully and exclusively caused by the software.

You said it yourself:
The game that caused this wasn't even the most demanding you were playing with that GPU... that is proof-positive that it was the game and not the GPU, otherwise, if your GPU's cooling were defect/insufficient, or other hardware components malfunctioning, your GPU would have overheated *especially* with more demanding games as a matter of course.
