What to do in Winter
Hey all new player still on my first year and wondering what everyone does for the Winter season. I took some time and hit the bottom of the mine so far, any suggestions?

Farm resources (ore, fish, wood), improve farm, improve relationships, work on the community bundles. If you have access to the desert, the skull cavern could be a good objective, but it is relatively dangerous.

And, if you happen to miss the market gardenning, (lol) you can always plant acres of winter forage. :steamhappy:
Anything other than farming. Clear through mine for resources, fish (some fish are season specific), hoe beach for winter crops, clear out trees for lumber, community centre bundles, look for artificats for museum collection, etc.

I chop down all the trees around town and on my farm, then plant the wild tree seeds all over the southern half of my farm and all around the railroad tracks. If you go heavy into kegs and preserves you'll need the wood. I also farm the mines for coal, work on the monster quests, tackle fishing bundles, check the ♥♥♥♥♥ every time she shows up, and work on friendships, particularly the single villager I'm planning to marry.

I focus on digging up artefacts, bonding with the townspeople, going into the skull cavern, selling gold bars and gems and the animals in the barn and the coop.

Also as a head's up, on the last day of Winter, go ahead and plant and water Winter seeds. Yes they'll die the next day, but you'll have a head's start for the first day of Spring in not having to re-hoe the area you normally plant your Spring crops. It saves on a lot of energy.

Also, work on upgrading your Watering Can, hopefully up to Iron Quality if you have the money and enough Iron Bars.

When I played for the first time, I did squat during winter except foraging around town, talking to people and mining. During my second year, I made sure I planted fruit that would yield all season (strawberries for spring (if you can get them, otherwise any other fruit will do), grapes in summer and cranberries in fall), then I saved them. I also got my barn and coops up to snuff to raise animals, using their product to make cheeses and mayo. I also planted various other veggies/fruits to bring in the cash, but the ones I listed in ()'s I saved up. Then I built some kegs and during the Winter I turned all those saved fruits into wine and sold those during Winter. If you're able to get your Greenhouse, you can fill it up with fruit that yield all season such as the ones mentioned above, or anything else for that matter and use that during Winter to gain some profit.

My greenhouse is filled (except a small corner - 10 spaces) with ancient fruit for winter wine-making. The other 10 are coffee beans for making into coffee to use in socialising. I have been stocking up on coffee all year. I hope the peeps like it cold and stale. :steamhappy: My greenhouse trees are 6 pomegranate and 6 peach for jam making.

So, with some fishing catchup and some deep mining, I am set for a busy winter.

However, I will miss the income from my five pigs. :steamsad:

I've been doing mushroom runs in The Mines. I lucked out and got three mushroom floors in winter. I didn't get any in summer or fall so I'm making up for that. It's a good thing to do if you want to make money but it's probably not the most interesting (after the first day or two). But you can do other things on some days or just do the mushroom floors for like an afternoon or evening instead of all day.

The first day, I searched the beach, the area in front of the carpenter's shop, and the parts of Cindersap Forest where you can dig things up to try to get snow yams and winter root. I got enough stuff to complete the winter foraging bundle at the community center, which gave me 30 seeds that I planted. I also found enough stuff to craft 10 more winter seeds. I have sprinklers so I didn't need to water but I had not left crops rotting in my field (probably a mistake) so I had to redig the 40 spaces. When I harvest those, I'll turn them into seeds and replant.

I'm waiting for the fruit trees in my greenhouse to mature so I can plant hops and ancient fruit around them. There is a thread somewhere on Chucklefish Forums about a layout that maximizes the cash you can make from your greenhouse (using peach trees, pomegranate trees, hops, and ancient fruit as filler) but it's not necessary to try to maximize income. I do it bc I enjoy it.

I also spent some time refining the ore I'd gotten from the Skull Cavern and making crystalaria (but you need batteries that you saved from the summer storms to make them). I also put my produce from summer and fall into kegs that I have filled my upgraded barn with (saves space if you use the completely upgraded barn). I always try to go to the Saloon at night to talk to the ppl there. I probably should try to talk to different ppl during the day as well. Winter seems like a good time to do that.
