When do the animals need hay?
Do I just put the hay in the barn for the cows? Do they need hay everyday and when should I feed them?

They need hay every day in winter and every wet day the rest of the year. However, you must let them out to eat grass on dry days, Spring, Summer and Autumn.

Once you have the delux barn and/or coop and at least one silo feeding becomes automatic.

Even auto-feeding doesn't work sometimes. Probably a bug.

They don't have to eat grass on sunny days in Spring, Summer, or Autumn, they can eat hay on those days too.

Obviously,

But, the player is unlikely to have hay available in the first half of year one, and buying it takes time and is costly.

You let them out in order to save time and money.

By the way, don't forget to shut them in at night or you will be chasing them all over the place to greet them and milk them if approppriate.

You don't have to feed animals, but if you do or let them out to graze, their mood will get higher with the chance of getting large and quality items. You have to let animals go into their farm buildings, or they will get grumpy, and plus there's a 50% chance to let wild animal attacks to occur.
