I admit to being one of the players who cannot fish early on as I simply cannot get sufficient minute control of my mouse.
If this is your problem fish the ponds on your farm for junk. Save the junk in a chest it has real value later. Sell the cola.
When you get the reward of three crab pots, after about 100 junk catches, use those on the small pond and increase the number to 12 when you can by either buying or crafting them. Just empty and bait them daily.
When you are able to purchase the iradium rod and trap bobber you will be able to fish for the more common fish without too much difficulty.
(Please, you lucky guys who have no problem with the fishing dynamic, just accept and don't rub our noses in it. Many thanks.)
Have you tried switching control from your mouse to keyboard? It doesn't make it easy, but it at least makes it possible.
I have z as my left click, x as my right. Though it doesn't help with the optional fishing at the fair, it helps everywhere else.
Another strategy is to put off fishing until you get a steel axe and unlock the secret forest. You'll mostly catch carp in the pond there and they are extremely easy to catch. It shouldn't take too much to level up enough to get the fiberglass rod.
But due to disability I cannot make that work. Others may well find this a useful suggestion though.
