[SOLVED] Map
How am I supposed to even use the map? I just started playing the game and the map is one of the only things that is guiding me right now, and it is extremely innaccurate and generally terrible. I ended up losing some of my first 500 just because I couldn't find my house, and it's going to happen again, how in the world am I supposed to use it to navigate? Is there a mod to fix this?

There's 3 roads that lead back to your farm... Go west of town, southwest of the mountains, or north of Cindersap Forest. I'm not sure what you're talking about, honestly. The map shows where your farm is, shows the buildings in town, shows the forest and the beach... How did you get lost? If you're in the forest, your farm is north of you on the map. Go north. If you're in the mountains, your farm is southwest of you. Go southwest.

I genuinely don't understand what's confusing about it? Did you not know you can hover over the buildings to get details?

The reason I find the map to be crappy is due to the way it shows me my position. After moving a certain direction to head to a specific place,I end up somewhere totally different. I have been trying to get to this one area and every time I take a path that seems right, I end up somewhere completely random. If there is no way to fix this in game, would there be a mod or something that fixes this?

It isn't broken, so no, there's no fix for it. :S Where are you trying to get to that the map is leading you astray? Some areas are simply blocked off... I just can't think of where you could be getting lost, unless you're in the forest, I guess?

I've been attempting to get to the house next to the well for two in game days now, every path I take puts me on a place on the map that is way off, as much as I want to like this game,if I can't find a way to use the map more efficiently by the two hour mark, I may have to unfortunately refund and give a thumbs down. Thanks for the help anyways though, I won't give up yet, since this game seems nice

What, you mean the Community Center? There's three paths that lead to it... Or I'm assuming that's what you mean, anyways? There's a fountain by the Community Center, not a well.

There's two paths, one to the east and west of Pierre's shop, where you buy seeds. Both lead up to the Community Center's little garden area / park. If you follow the path northeast from there, you'll reach the mountains...

Honestly, you can walk the entire map three times over in a day. :S I'm not trying to be rude, but the town really isn't that big.

Your farm leads to the Bus Stop, Mountains and Forest.

The town connects to the Beach, Forest and Mountains.

The mountains connect to the mines, quarry (must be unlocked) and train station (must be unlocked)

Well, it would be a shame if you gave up on the game simply because you didn't like the in-game map. That's honestly probably the least relevant and least useful part of the game.

Like I_Kinda_Fail said, the actual area the town covers is fairly small, and easily learned in just a few game days.

I suggest avoiding trying to navigate via the map. During your first week, you should be planting the parsnip seeds Lewis gave you. You should visit down (by heading due east) and go to Pierre's store and buy a few more seeds (buy a little bit of everything) and plant that too.

Then try making a chest.

Then try wandering around the Cindersap forest, (due south of your farm) and look for forage.

The main reason for this is due to the map being my only guide, since I cannot mark any areas on it and there is nothing else to really guide me. I've already planted the parsnips and some beans, also made a chest, but the moment I go to do the quest of meeting the npcs I get lost trying to find them all. I recall seeing on some stream that I can regain energy in one of the buildings and Since I've been stuck on half energy I would like to regain it without having to skip a day. I know it's a really close minded and stupid thing to do to give up on the game for this reason but having no experience in the game before with such a finicky map as my only way around, I really can't enjoy something that looks so great.

Note that I probably won't be giving up soon and I will be making an effort to enjoy this, but if I can't manage to memorize the paths around i will unfortunately have to return this, thanks for all the help though

Just don't use the map.

Walk around town and learn it. I'll admit I was a bit confused the first 2 or 3 hours in, but after you run around a bit, you'll realize it's not a very large area to explore. There's no penalty if you just wind up wandering around figuring out the area, so spend an in game day checking it out :)

I agree that the map doesn't show your position very well. It's just not terribly accurate. I have no idea if a mod could change that.

However, the town is really small and I learned where everything was very quickly just by exploring looking for foragable items. It shouldn't take you long to memorize the town so well that you never look at the map tab.

As for as the quest to meet all the villagers - take your time. I don't think I finished that in my first game until fall of the first year.

I recall seeing on some stream that I can regain energy in one of the buildings and Since I've been stuck on half energy I would like to regain it without having to skip a day.

That area doesn't open up until the 3rd of summer. The mines are also closed off when you first start. If you are "stuck" at half energy then you need to go to sleep by midnight. Going to bed any later means you don't get full energy back.

edit: try this picture for a map of the Stardew Valley world. It's not something in game but it might help. Possible mild spoilers, I guess.

It took me like 20 in game days to get all the villagers met. Take your time.

Yes, you are not alone. Your location on the map is often inaccurate. Should be fixed.

Thanks for all the help, I decided to wander around for a few days while i managed to get some crops growing. I eventually made it to summer and its getting better. I am now somewhat more used to the map now, in the way that I avoid it. It is unfortunate that the map is misleading and inaccurate however, and the friends that bought the game with me have refunded the game for that reason. I doubt the devs are still working on the game, but if they are, it should be a priority to make the map more accurate. Once again, thanks for all the help guys

There's just one dev, and he is working on the game still. Probably not on the map though. Multi-player is the next big thing coming.

Honestly, the map is awful. I got confused using it too. You really just have to learn where everything is by playing and memorizing. The town isn't very big or confusing after you've played for a while. I actually wish it were bigger now! Stardew doesn't offer much in the way of tutorials, so it's really a game where you have to stumble through it for a while, make tons of mistakes, and just learn. The wiki is also super helpful. The map just isn't helpful at all :P
Spockus Jan 3, 2017 @ 4:20am
I want to recycle the map using a trash recycler so I can get torches, it would literally be more useful than the map lolz
