I genuinely don't understand what's confusing about it? Did you not know you can hover over the buildings to get details?
There's two paths, one to the east and west of Pierre's shop, where you buy seeds. Both lead up to the Community Center's little garden area / park. If you follow the path northeast from there, you'll reach the mountains...
Honestly, you can walk the entire map three times over in a day. :S I'm not trying to be rude, but the town really isn't that big.
Your farm leads to the Bus Stop, Mountains and Forest.
The town connects to the Beach, Forest and Mountains.
The mountains connect to the mines, quarry (must be unlocked) and train station (must be unlocked)
Well, it would be a shame if you gave up on the game simply because you didn't like the in-game map. That's honestly probably the least relevant and least useful part of the game.
Like I_Kinda_Fail said, the actual area the town covers is fairly small, and easily learned in just a few game days.
I suggest avoiding trying to navigate via the map. During your first week, you should be planting the parsnip seeds Lewis gave you. You should visit down (by heading due east) and go to Pierre's store and buy a few more seeds (buy a little bit of everything) and plant that too.
Then try making a chest.
Then try wandering around the Cindersap forest, (due south of your farm) and look for forage.
Walk around town and learn it. I'll admit I was a bit confused the first 2 or 3 hours in, but after you run around a bit, you'll realize it's not a very large area to explore. There's no penalty if you just wind up wandering around figuring out the area, so spend an in game day checking it out :)
I agree that the map doesn't show your position very well. It's just not terribly accurate. I have no idea if a mod could change that.
However, the town is really small and I learned where everything was very quickly just by exploring looking for foragable items. It shouldn't take you long to memorize the town so well that you never look at the map tab.
As for as the quest to meet all the villagers - take your time. I don't think I finished that in my first game until fall of the first year.
That area doesn't open up until the 3rd of summer. The mines are also closed off when you first start. If you are "stuck" at half energy then you need to go to sleep by midnight. Going to bed any later means you don't get full energy back.
edit: try this picture for a map of the Stardew Valley world. It's not something in game but it might help. Possible mild spoilers, I guess.
There's just one dev, and he is working on the game still. Probably not on the map though. Multi-player is the next big thing coming.
Honestly, the map is awful. I got confused using it too. You really just have to learn where everything is by playing and memorizing. The town isn't very big or confusing after you've played for a while. I actually wish it were bigger now! Stardew doesn't offer much in the way of tutorials, so it's really a game where you have to stumble through it for a while, make tons of mistakes, and just learn. The wiki is also super helpful. The map just isn't helpful at all :P
