Completing help wanted quests with old items
Do you have to have gathered/fished within the days of the quest? I know I have delivered something I caught the same day, but before accepting the quest, and I think I remember that it was okay, but today I tried delivering a very old catfish to Alex and it didn't complete the quest.

Sometimes the quests will want items you've gathered after getting the quest. I've had a few like that--some fishing for Willy and ore for Clint. Usually, though, it will give you a progress update in the help wanted ad at the bottom, like Copper Ore 12/30. I don't think I've gotten that request for Alex, so not sure about that one.

It don't think it will show progress for when it's just the one item in my experience. I meant Sam btw, not Alex.

In my experience, it hasn't mattered when you got the item. Such as when Clint asks you to mine 30 copper, I use what I already had in chests (I hadn't gone to mine copper for about 1 month at that point). You just need to click them into your inventory 1 at a time and it registers. When it takes the item as part of the quest, it's always taken the item straight away no matter when I got it. Perhaps it was just a small bug or you missed the delivery time?

I'm sure that copper ore did register by just taking it from chest. Almost everything else too.
Fish for Willy was the only thing that didn't if I remember correctly. However, I don't remember that for sure...

Thanks for the replies. I know I was on the second day of the quest, it was definately not too late. Maybe fish or food is the exception because they need to be fresh. But I have only gotten one quest where it needed to be fresh, but it wasn't a time limited quest. It then said "a fresh melon".

If you need new items for a quest you can just put them in a chest and then pick them up again. The game won't count item stacks, though. You have to pick them up one by one.

The "fresh" in fresh melon does not mean anything. The only quests where you have to collect new stuff are the ore quests from Clint and the fish quests from Willy where you can keep your items. In every other quest you can use old items and you have to actually give the item to that person and you lose it. Did you give the item to the right person and did you "gift" it properly?

I gave it the same way I always have. I did everything you said. I must remember it wrong, or it was a bug. Gonna test it out again as soon as I can :)

Okay! So now I know. When it's ores you can take them from inventory one by one and they count, like you say. But I got a quest from willy now, to catch 5 sardines, and it didnt count like with ores when I picked one up from the chest. So At least fish I will certainly say have to be fresh.

the fish don't have to be "fresh" but you do have to actually catch it for it to count--willy doesn't take the fish anyway, you keep them afterwards and just talk to him instead of gifting

if a villager asks to you gift them, on the other hand, it doesn't matter how old the item is. he should've accepted the catfish

Well then, for some reason it isn't the case for me. Both willy and the gifting quest did not accept the fish I caught beforehand.
