Stardew Valley won't start
Everytime i start the game it says it is running for 1 minute, then it stops. No windows pop up, nothing pops up, I can't do anything and I have searched online and nothing helped.

So if someone is using an old d3d9.dll like I was (To play older games) You'll need to use the updated version of d3d9.dll.

Just make sure to have a Backup of each and just switch between the two when needed when you want to go playing the older games. xD

The same is happening to me. I've tried reinstalling and installing Steam and the game, but I just get a white screen that pops up. It does say its running then also stops like you described. I've tried so many things so far like running it as an admin, etc. Still nothing.

Have you tried all of these? (Be sure to test the game between each step):
  1. Verify the cache.
  2. Plug in headphones.
  3. Ensure Steam is not running in compatibility mode.
  4. Delete startup_preferences.
  5. Restart your computer.
  6. Delete %appdata%/Stardew Valley. It is a hidden file, so search for it directly through windows search. (Backup your saves, beforehand)
  7. Disable Antivirus
  8. Run as administrator
  9. Reinstall the game.
  10. Reinstall XNA.
  11. Reinstall directx9.
  12. Update graphics drivers and sound card drivers.
If all of these don't work, post your error log from %appdata%/Stardew Valley/Errorlogs, it will help me to pinpoint the problem.

right click, properties, check integrity of the game cache

I could cry of happiness, I've been trying to figure it out for 2 hours. I deleted the startup preferences folder and we are back on. Thank you SO much.

No problem, happy farming!

If that's what fixed it, is there something I probably did that caused the problem?

No, it seems to happen randomly to new installs. I'm not sure what causes it.

Bizarre, okay! It happened after 6 hours of play, but the first time I played it after my laptop was first restarted. Who knows then. Thank you again (: I hope this works for the original poster!

I've been having the same issue for at least two hours now. How do I find the startup_preferences? I've searched both my C drive (main drive where Steam is installed) and my G drive (where my games are installed) and haven't found anything. Thanks!

Search directly for %appdata%, then open up the Stardew Valley folder.

I couldn't find it when I searched for %appdata% even. I had to find the stream file, then find the stardew valley file within that (streamapps>common>stardewvalley) then I found it in there. When I seached for it, it came up with a ton of responses related to microsoft so I had to do it like that instead. Hope that helps

When I search for %appdata% it brings up AppData > Local > Temp > steelseriesengine-redist which is an empty folder. I tried going into the Stardew folder within Steam, but I don't see a startup_preferences file there either. =/

Enable the viewing of hidden files, the file path should be Appdata > Roaming > Stardew Valley.
Veruwen Dec 28, 2016 @ 7:19pm
I'm able to find the Stardew folder in the Appdata folder now, but still no startup_preferences. Instead, there's just a folder of error logs. The logs read:

Message: This resource could not be created.
InnerException:
Stack Trace: at Microsoft.Xna.Framework.Audio.AudioEngine..ctor(String settingsFile, TimeSpan lookAheadTime, String rendererId)
at StardewValley.Game1.Initialize()
at Microsoft.Xna.Framework.Game.RunGame(Boolean useBlockingRun)
at StardewValley.Program.Main(String[] args)

I've already tried reinstalling XNA from the Stardew folder.

Still no luck. Although this time when I tried to start it, Steam gave me a trading card for the game. It didn't start the game though. I'm completely baffled. I think I might just have to throw in the towel for tonight. I'm not sure that any game is worth 4+ hours of troubleshooting. Thanks for taking the time to try to help though, everyone! :)
