Purple 3x3 Area In Wizards House?

When entering the wizards tower, in the back near the stairs to get to the library, there is this 3x3 purple-tiled area with a machine that you can in some way interact with in the middle.... i have no idea what it's used for. anybody know or have an idea?

Without seeing that I assume it's the reward from his 'late' game quest.
