Upgrading the hoe allows you to till more soil with a single action: http://stardewvalleywiki.com/Hoe
The starting hoe does one tile.
The copper hoe does three.
The steel hoe does five.
The gold hoe does 3x3.
The Iridium hoe does 6x3.
However with an upgraded axe you can remove those bushes on that grass if you want more room to place a building/buildings there so you can free up a little bit of farm space from buildings.
