I feel bad if I pass out. So I try to do everything not to pass out.
It allows you to get back to farm anytime, not just 2am. You just fished/mined something out, you're on your farm already, loaded furnace/whatever, went to permanent beach/mountain totem (another 1 mil of gold wasted, yes, so what?) standing right next to you and you're fishing/mining already.
And it's permanent for the sake of permanency. I'd never use totems just because they're consumable. I just hate consumables.
Also there's not enough money sinks even with that scepter and permanent totems.
The Minecarts usually do a decent enough job of transport, but there's no minecart down towards the bottom left of Cindersnap, or in the skull caverns, etcedera. It's really just convenience.
@Charlotte after 350 hours why are you still walking? Don't you have a horse? And don't you use the blue totems to get to the beach?
I'm doing a run right now (which would explain her 350 hours - we do more than one run) that has no Farming and no Fishing allowed. All my money is from Mining, Combat or Foraging. And I have about 150k.
A normal run, by this point, I'd have a bunch of sheds full of kegs and junimo huts set up. 64 starfruit wine sell for I think around 120k, or more with the Artisan perks. Alternatively, you can plant about 1200 hops in the summer, and make about 200k per week off beer alone, with enough kegs.
If you start lining the map with stuff like kegs, beehives or crystalariums, you can make even more. You can make an extra 20k per week or so by planting maple trees at the train station and tapping them.
You can easily make over 1m per season, with the right setup. I think it's possible to make over 5m per season.
But yeah, I've got 150k right now without even farming or fishing. :P And I probably make like 80k profit per week, give or take. My RNG is terrible this run. I keep getting male slimes, so they can't reproduce.
Totems are an option, but at 5,000g a pop all you need is 400 uses to break even on the Scepter. It depends on your routine, but you can use it a lot - like multiple times per day. For instance if you are hunting for artifacts, you may use it at least twice to check Mountain/Beach via Obelisks (granted by your logic you won't like Obelisks either). You will also use it a lot out of laziness, don't want to walk back from bus stop? Warp. Greenhouse looks too far from house? Warp. etc
I've never lost anything from passing out, and I've done so many times.
That sucks...
5,000g is the cost at the Casino. You cannot make enough to offset what a frequent Scepter user would consume since getting mass Fiber is difficult.
Horse only makes you 30% faster, so if you need to walk 30% less distance is is worth the tradeoff. Walking somewhere and warping back is always faster than a horse (ie, 50% distance traveled vs 70% threshold), with the exception if movement is over a movement reduction tile (ie, crops).
Ultimately it seems like you have already decided that it is a useless item since Totems are 'free' and unlimited apparently. You do not seem to accept that you can use it many times a day saving yourself time, so there is nothing more to be said. It saves you time if used effectively, whether that is worth 2 million to you is your call.
Those hours are spread over a bunch of different files (about seven, a few of which were challenge maps), most of which do have the horse. The horse is a godsend for mid-game, but it has its' own drawbacks like not being able to fit through certain gaps, and I usually tend to walk a good enough distance away from it doing my many tasks. The horse is certainly great for cutting down the time it takes to do a foraging loop though, since those usually take you all across the map and back home.
I don't use the craftable totems, and I haven't actually bought either of the permanent totems yet- I can afford them, and I have the materials, but with the speed boosts, the horse, and the scepter they're just redundant in my eyes, and I don't want to crowd the area around my house with them.
Unfortunately using the scepter doesn't return the horse to the house, so wherever it is when i warp is where I leave it for the day.
