don't. just don't prepare for winter at all...
but well if you insist on preparing... here is a list of stuff that i would do but i don't actually do becauze it's pointless:
prepare fruits and honey for kegs to run through the winter
also for jelly machines
use your seed machines to make the spring seed so stack up crops you want to make into seeds
stack up materials for tappers and place them to stock more kegs and such
in winter you NEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEED a heater for your animals otherwise they won't produce

but actually don't actually do any of this and do stuff like fishing and mining and growing your relationship with the townpeople like stuff that you don't have time to do in the other seasons

that's no problem making money in winter... you also don't you have like 3 season to make money that's fairly enough... i for example only make money from summer becauze fuq it i make about 3 million in 1 summer that's fine

but stuff that makes money:
Selling Fish
Selling Materials from the mine
Stuff produced by kegs and jellymachines
Animals

but honestly you make enough money in the other season just progress the mine and talk to all the townpeople especially the person you wanna marry... or rather find a person you wanna marry

The game is designed to make increasing profit from Spring to Fall, with Fall being potentially the highest earning season between growing Fall crops and making artisan goods with leftover Summer crops, so you don't have to farm for income during winter. Pretty smart of CA's part, if you ask me. But this isn't obvious to new players, so don't think you should have known this already.

You will eed food for resotring your energy and health, but beyond that, there's not much to prepare for. There are only two real monetary demands in Winter: money for upgrading your tools (and for the ores/coal to do so, if you don't like mining) and saving money for Spring to buy seeds. Beyond that, you can coast through Winter doing nothing, which can be pretty boring. It's a good time to work of foraging, fishing, mining and combat skills, and to build or improve your farm buildings/house if you have the money, so there ARE plenty of things you can do.

i am REALLY loving this game. i played Harvest Moon on the SNES in 1998, and this is like HM on steroids.

The only thing I do is make sure my silo is filled with enough hay to support the animals. I don't want to have purchase hay. Animals don't die if you don't feed them though. I think they just stop producing (and get grumpy). But I put so much effort into getting them producing high quality products that I won't ignore them in the winter.

I'm in year 2 winter and I did buy some extra fall seeds to grow in the greenhouse. Mainly for gifts, but I have cranberries and strawberries set aside to grow in there eventually. I have a huge stock of fruit, hops, wheat, and coffee beans to process in barrels or kegs, so my goal in winter is to fill one or two sheds with kegs, barrels, etc. I'll have to start farming the mine for metals and coal though.

Last winter I crafted 50 winter seeds. I just planted them. I don't think I'll do that again. I don't have the kegs to process the crystal fruit anyways.

My first winter was spend in the mines, mainly. I didn't make much money. That's not an issue really since there's recurring costs for the farm (as long as you manage your hay appropriately). Actually, the only serious cost in winter for me is the weapon upgrades from the adventurer's club.

If you want to make money in winter, focus on the bundles for the greenhouse. And invest in seeds which produce crops routinely.

or you grow ancient fruits in your greenhouse which is the most effective way for the whole year
Personally for me, i depend on my animals and fishing. but because there isn't a lot to do crops wise so i used this time to work on friendships and mining, not really for money but to do the guild missions.

well making money is best with crops... i make 1-4 million per sommer with crops alone

If you have them. Alas I haven't come across one yet in my 2nd game. I wasn't planning on using them much this game anyways. I had a greenhouse full of ancient fruit last game. Time for something different. I'm thinking strawberries, blueberries, cranberries...and I'm not sure what else.

Prepare for winter? There really isn't much you can do in Winter that can't be done in any other season so I really wouldn't worry too much about it, all you really need to do to prepare for winter is make sure you have enough feed for your livestock to last the winter else you will have to buy some from Marnie or let your animals starve.

A greenhouse is probably the handiest thing you can have before winter comes however considering that this is probably your first playthrough I am guessing you have not completed the required community bundles for that or did not go the joja route allowing you to buy the greenhouse for money, in any case it isn't necessary, just nice to have.

Winter for me in Stardew Valley is mostly about preparing the farm for Spring, mining ore to upgrade tools and build sprinklers and other devices needed for the next year, upgrade your house and buildings if you have the money and resources but in the end the biggest thing you want to do is make sure you have enough money to buy a good amount of seeds for the new year.

Get a heater for your animals, stock up your silo, upgrade your hoe to find more food (winter roots, snow yams)
Psycho Paul Dec 3, 2016 @ 6:20pm
Berries and hay.
The use winter to focus on gather materials like gold, iron and copper etc.
Also use it to redisign your farm.

Using a suggestion from someone else, I made a winter seeds farm using the seeds you can craft after gathering each of the winter forage items.

In my first year where im still in need of money i get alot of cash using this idea. i still have time to fish and mine as by the the first winter i have the sprinklers. Also by saving a number so i could plant 100 at the start of next winter, I had a huge winter seed farm by winter year 2.

The items grow fast and making the seeds doesnt cost you anything. I was surprised at how profitable it was with no investment.
