barn or shed
I know the deluxe barn has more space on the inside, but does it take up more space on the outside too? which one is better for filling with kegs while still having tons of room to grow crops outside?

Shed is better for kegs I believe

Shed is 7x3, Barn is 7x4 - so the Barn is 33% bigger. However a Barn holds twice as much as a Shed. Barn wins no contest, but you can't decorate the inside like you can with a Shed if that matters to you. Upgraded Barn also costs more.

so overall an upgraded barn wins despite the fact that it takes up a bit more space outside?

Yes. A shed holds 3.2 kegs per outside tile while a barn holds 4.8 kegs per outside tile, so it isn't even close. That's with optimal keg placement.

You can put paths down in the barn, like stone flooring, if that helps. I wouldn't wanna put my beer down on a hay floor, but stone floor makes it look less bad.

A shed holds a little over half what a deluxe barn holds, but it's also got other benefits. The footprint is narrower, meaning you can slip it into spaces on the more restrictive maps that a barn may not fit, and its' door is dead center to the building, unlike a barn which is almost all the way to the left.

It also costs less than half the cost of a Barn and alll its' upgrades, meaning you get access to it right away for cheaper.

Overall I recommend the Shed over the Deluxe Barn for use with storage and production machines- but being able to decorate them like your house is an added bonus.

If you're looking for a free spot to put your producers without having to build either- nobody minds if you pave over the right half of the Railway map. Or put things in the Tunnel. Or pave over the Quarry. Or put anything in the Mountain area anywhere beyond the first bridge leading to the Mine entrance. Or pave over the Quarry. Or put things on the Back Alley. Or the majority of Cindersnap Forest, aside from the path area.
