Gave "loved" gift, but reputation stays at zero
I gave a pumpkin to willy, according to the wiki this is a loved gift, and he did show the heart icon when i gave him that.

However reputation was at zero before and after. Nothing changed...

I don't know the exact values, but let's say each heart (NPCs go up to 10 hearts) is worth 100 points.

Talking to that NPC is worth 10 points. A liked item is 15 points. A loved item is 30 points. You'd need 3-4 loved items to go up a heart, but talking to them everyday speeds this along.

And doing missions (Haley wants a Joja Cola, Willy wants a Squid, etc.) give a pretty decent boost, something like +80.

Again, I don't know the real numbers, that's just a rough example.

I think it's a LITTLE better than that, but ... yeah, even a LOVED gift can still be less than a full heart.

I see.. they made into much more of a grind than i thought. Sigh... ok i guess ill have to use the wiki, this is too much work for experimenting.

Yeah they probably balanced the game for people who check the wiki. I don't see why it would be so much of a grind otherwise.

It's really not, it's only if you're trying to befriend every single person.

For example, Alex and Evelyn like flowers like daffodils or sweet peas. You can give them those to raise their friendship, along with chatting with them as you walk past, since both usually stand around town square or in their house. Once you get to know Alex, he might say, "If you want to impress my grandpa, you should give him a leek. He loves those things." And later on in the game, Evelyn tells you that George loves leeks.

Not everything is so simple, some villagers definitely are harder than others. The families aren't too hard though. If you befriend Jodi, she'll tell you what her family likes. By befriending her family, they'll tell you what she likes.

The trick is to find a general, standard gift that 90% of people like, like mayonnaise, apples or daffodils, and hand them out to your favorites.

Emily talks about fashion and gems a lot; so naturally you'd give her cloth and gems. Emily will say, "Did you know Gus loves oranges?" Once you befriend Gus, he'll say, "That woman who's here every night, Pam, she likes her beer..." Give Pam some beer, and she'll tell you how much her daughter loves emeralds. Give Penny some bling, and she might tell you that Vincent loves grapes. Give the little man some grapes and he'll tell you what Sam loves. Sam tells you that his BFF Sebastian loves frozen tears..... You get the idea.

Start with either obvious gifts or general gifts
Obvious gift examples
Maru, the scientist, likes metal bars and batteries
Clint, the blacksmith, likes bars and gems
Pam and Shane, the alcoholics, like beer
Most of the grown women like diamonds (Marnie, Jodie, Caroline, maybe more)
The kids like sweets (Pink cake, cranberry candy)
Sebastian likes "emo" stuff - frozen tears, obsidian, void eggs
Sam the stoner likes pizza
Willy the fisherman likes hard to catch fish

That is extremely helpful, thank you!

Not only on the info, but also on fixing my vision of the game from being a grind to being something that has an inner system that can be worked over time. I'll definitely try to identify the general good gifts, and work my way from there with birthdays and unlocking dialogs.

Haha, no problem. It definitely helps to glance through the Wiki, as soon items "make sense", but you wouldn't think about them.

Haley likes sunflowers - Haley has yellow hair. Easy to remember.
Haley likes coconuts - Haley likes the beach. Easy to remember.
But I certainly never would've thought of those on my own.

And I know it's way off, but at the end of the game you can get an item that gives free gifts everyday. On Emily's birthday, for example, it'll give some cloth. On Jas's, it'll give a fairy rose. On nobody's birthday, I think it either gives iridium ore or pulls from a pool of items... Not sure.

I never bothered getting it, myself.

The thing is, loved gifts give you 80 friendship points with someone. Each heart is 250 points, so giving someone one loved gift wouldn't boost it up to a full heart. If you talk to someone every day for a week, this will gain you 140 points. Just read the wiki and it will all make a bit more sense.

I would just look up the loves for the birthdays/xmas and use universal likes for the rest. Way too many NPCs to carry around a full bag of potential gifts - with the exception if you are just working on one or two specific ones for some reason.

All you need are stacks of 2 items, a universal vegetable (ie, potato or parsnip) and a universal flower (ie, sunflower). Everyone except for the kids, Abigail, Haley and Sam likes veggies, the latter likes flowers. So carry around 2 stacks of stuff and just hand them out like candy. You get only around half the XP, but you will handy out more than 2x the gifts easy, so it all works out with almost no thought.

One of the easiest is Lewis.

Lewis GIVES you 15 parsnip seeds. Hint: Lewis likes Parsnips.

Once you get to know him better, he'll ask you if you grow Blueberries. Hint: Lewis likes Blueberries.

Leah is another easy one. She's a starving artist who supliments her diet with forage. Hint: Leah likes most foraged items.

She's a woodworking artist. Hint: Leah likes driftwood.

I also made a little cheat sheet of people who like the super-cheap forage items so even early on I can just give em one whenever I see them since I'm almost always carrying some anyway. Team Spring Onion: Leah, Linus, Harvey and Team Salmonberry - a few others, etc. Save the daffodils whenever possible for Haley and the other flower lovers, leeks for George, save a few parsnips for Pam and the rest of the villagers who don't like Spring Onions/Salmonberry.

It's a cheap way to get a head start on raising relations, talk to em as you run by and throw em a cheap "liked" forage item. You can get a couple stars on a fair number of people fairly painlessly. Obviously be a little more proactive on the one you want to marry.

It's a steady process and helps to get at least a small start early. C'mon it would be BS if you could just give somebody a couple of pumpkins and they'd immediatly be your BFF...

I'm loving all the rules-of-thumb shared here. It's otherwise so exhausting to be constantly alt-tabbing to the wiki during playtime.

Another tip, there's a few good times to catch a lot of people at once. There's the usual saloon crew, the ones who are usually in the town center during the day. Then 2 times to note: Friday nights in the saloon has a lot more people, rainy nights are good too. And the Tuesday early afternoon aerobics class in Pierre's. I try to keep watch for those times, when I'm planning what order to do things it's usually pretty painless to work in a path by there at the right time and at least say hello to a bunch of people at once and maybe toss them each a cheap "liked" item.

It's the statue of endless fortune or something. The one from Grandpa's year 3 review gives iridium, and the one I mean gives birthday gifts. I might have the name wrong. It's a golden statue, and you get it from the Casino with Qi coins.

To get to the Casino,
Go investigate the power box in the tunnel directly west of the bus stop...
