If you hold the left-click down, it shoots up. If you want it to move up a tiny bit, you have to just keep clicking once or twice.
Likewise, if you let go of the button, the bobber plummets down and will bounce off the button.
It takes some getting used to, but once you hit level 3 it's way easier.
Second, visit the lakes and try for Carp, Carp are VERY sluggish and are easy to catch.
Don't try to make a maximum cast, make shallow casts, you get lower quality, but easier to catch fish that way.
I am guessing throwing the hook farther gives more experience?
Crab pots give fishing experience also :)
As far as I know, the hook throw only factor's into the difficulty of the catch, not experience. I was able to finish the lake fishing bundle prior to hitting level 3, so while the trash may be higher than usual, you still get a lot of fish.
Don't forget that the time of day and season affect what fish/items your catching.
