Does the first year matter the most

I plant the "free" seeds then go shopping for potatoes (the start capital will buy 10), but, if you pick up some forage on the way (dont forget to check the road on the other side of the bus) you can sell these and buy a few more. Then go to the beach and grab any shells, sell through the box on your plot as the fishing shop is closed. If you can also complete a couple of challenges such as the simple "give someone a gift" then you can buy more potatoes. Aim to plant as many potatoes as possible up to the 6 of spring then switch to parsnip until the 8 of spring. All these can be harvested and sold before the Egg Festival - save all the money made after the 8 of spring. Cut down trees for the sap, you will need one fertilizer per strawberry purchased at the egg festival. You should be able to buy at least 70 but more like 80+ strawberries. Prepare the soil, water and ferilize on the morning of the festival, watch the time and don't miss buying the strawberries. You should be able to plant them between ten and midnight. This should give you planty of money to buy the backpack upgrade, a pomegranate and an apple tree, a watering can upgrade and then plenty of seeds on the 1 of summer. After the egg festival, maintain your veg. plots and start mining to get the watering can upgrade in time for 1 of summer. The rest is up to you! Oh, don't water the strawberries after the second crop, there is not time for them to crop again. This should increase your freetime for things like mining, fishing and socialising.

Does the first year matter the most

Game is infinite, so while it's matter - don't stress it. There exist ways to finish first year with million gold, but it kill all the fun from playnig.

Just play nice and steady. Plant crops, water them, go into mine for copper and coal, upgrade tools and buy inventory extender.

Your goal is to raise level of Farming to 6 (to get sprinklers) and upgrade tools to iron one.
From this point your farming life will become much-much easier and you can spend more time in fishing, minning, fighting, etc.

Well early game is when the real hell is. In Spring you do not have access to the spa that can regen your energy, it only unlock in the summer. What you should focus on is the bundles (if you try to restore the community centers) and gaining access to quality sprinklers as soon as you can.

My goals:
Spring:
1. Get as much money as you can.
2. Plant a Apple and Pomegranate Tree close to the end of Spring or whenever possible. Aboslutly latest at the start of the summer (very important). Total cost: 10,000g
3. Fill the Spring corps bundle. Ignore the Quality Crop Bundle for the Parsnips. Parsnips will have a detrimental effect if you focus on them so do the bundle with Melons, Pumpkins and Corn instead.
5. Never plant so many crops that you can't water them without losing all of your energy, you need to do other stuff as well.
6. Plant Spring Seeds you get from the Spring Foraging Bundle. When you harvest them your Foraging Skill will go up instead of farming and is a very effective way to rank Foraging.
7. Fish in the mountain lake a lot to rank your fishing level up to unlock better rods as well as making fishing easier.
8. Go into the mine and get material to upgrade your gear, build stuff and try to gain access to gold ore that is needed for quality sprinklers.
9. Go to the traveling merchant every Friday and Sunday to look what kind of items he is selling to help you unlock the bundles easier. Wool and anything that helps you unlock the Animal and/or Artisan Bundle is very good to buy.
10. Woo your wife/husband as much as you can.
11. Buy like 10 seeds of strawberry but do not use them. Not really worth it and it will solve itself later.
12. Try to get a barn and a coop with at least 1 white and brown chicken. Pet the cows and chicken every day and let them run free and eat grass. You need them for the animal bundle.
13. Pet your pet every day.

Summer:
1. If not done yet. PLANT A APPLE AND POMEGRANATE TREE!!!!! They take a whole season to grow.
2. Focus on filling the Bundles.
3. Plant Melons and Blueberry for money. Blueberry is very cost effective and give you the biggest amount of money per day. Problem is that you will not have much money for like 13-14 days. Hops are also pretty effective and produce every day, but give less money then Blueberry. You want to plant at least 1 Hops crop.
4. Plant Summer Seeds just like in point 6 in spring to level up your Foraging, but it can be ignored if you already got Foraging lvl7 (it is important for winter).
5. Get more stuff from the mine and get those sprinklers. Very important now.
6. Use the spa whenever you can to extend how much you can do every day.
7. Focus a lot of getting a upgraded Coop and Barn. You need both Goats and ducks to finish the animal bundle.
8. Fish and try to get as many fishes in the Fishing Bundles. Also rank up Fishing.
9. Same as number 9 in Spring.
10. Same as number 10 in Spring.

Fall:
1. You should have quality sprinklers at this point. Get a lot of them.
2. Your number 1 focus in this season is to focus on finishing all Bundles in the Pantry to unlock the Greenhouse for the winter. Without the greenhouse in the winter it will be a horrible season as you need money for spring and you can't get much money from somewhere.
3. Visit the Travling Merchant every Friday and Sunday to solve bundles.
4. Plant Cranberries as they give the most money per day
5. Fish for all Fishes you can get this season to finish the Bundles.Unless you are really lucky with the Traveling Merchant it will be unlikely you can finish all bundles before Summer on Year 2. If you fail to get all Fishes you can get this season you might just have to wait a whole year in order to get them again (which sucks).
6. If you have no problem with the Bundles do whatever you want.
7. Woo your wife/husband.
8. Get ready for winter and save up money for spring.

Winter.
1. You need the Greenhouse now in order to enjoy this season. Trust me here as I failed the first time.
2. Just because it is winter doesn't mean you can't farm. Winter Seeds still grow in winter so make a giant farm out of those.
3. Focus on fishing and mining
4. Do you remember those 10 strawberry seeds from point 11 in Spring? Plant those in the greenhouse and use seed makers to make a lot of seeds for the spring. You can easily get like 500 strawberry seeds.
5. You can also instead of going with Strawberries you can instead focus on coffee. The plant produce every 2 days and give 4 seeds which can be planeted again or sold. They can easily out grow strawberries in money gain. Coffee will also stay alive in Summer so you can start summer with already producing plants.

When it comes to money growing crops is by far the best. Animals are just horrible as you need to do so much busy work and it can't be automatized like with sprinklers. When it comes to farming Artisan is the best way to make huge amount of money, but it can only really be applied in the very late game after like the 2 first years. Agriculturist makes all crop grow 10% faster, but it can always be countered by the Artisan's use of grow fast which gives 25%. Artisan uses grow fast as quality of the crop doesn't matter when you make it into jam or wine, while the Agriculturist uses quality fertilizers to get better quality crops.

TL;DR
If you want to get money. Get the Greenhouse before winter and be efficient with your farming. Pick the Artisan skill for long term play, while Agriculturist for short term.

Fishing is by far the best goldmaker in first spring
However, you don't want to neglect farming and foraging completely because you need to skill it up at least some levels.
For fishing, start in the town to get first level or two, easely done in 1 day.
After that fish in the mountainlake cos fish is more valueble there.
When its raining, and your confident you can catch catfish without to many fails, river might be better than lake
