PC Advantages?
So, I'm thinking about getting this on my Switch. However, I don't need the game to be portable all that often, so it wouldn't be a huge improvement.

I'm wondering if there's any considerable advantages the PC version might have that the Switch won't. It's still got a touch screen, which is almost as good as a mouse, so it seems to me like the big difference would be console commands or mods. Are any of those present and a big deal?

There are no console commands as far as i kow, you get mods, but you need a sepcial program to use the mods, and i know people will be able to add the link to the modding program, there's no real advantages to getting this on PC over Switch, the only thing is the mods really, and the huge advantage of switch is taking it mobile, which is why i would wanna get it for switch

The more trouble I have to go through to use mods, the less likely I am to use them anyway. Not a huge fan of modding, especially if the game wasn't designed with modders in mind and is actually complete *coughbethesacough*

But there still is the matter of not needing it mobile often, though I would get more use out of that than mods in most cases.

For most aesthetic mods, all you have to do is replace files, which is very easy. The modding API is only required for fancier mods that actually change how the game works.

Also, longevity might be a concern. I'm pretty sure I'll still be able to play Stardew Valley in 30 years if I want to (assuming society hasn't collapsed from increased income inequality or climate change) because I'll still have a computer in 2047, while consoles tend to be boxed and forgotten after ten years.

But yes, if mobility is a bigger priority, you might prefer the Switch.

I really don;t think any game is specifically designed with modders in mind, or most games aren;t anyway

I believe the PC gets the multiplayer beta first.

Developers essentially choose how easy or hard their games will be to mod.

For example, a mod-friendly developer will simply use regular image files for portraits and sound files for music. If you want custom portraits or music, all you have to do is replace the image file or sound file. Often, the game will even catch additional image files as long as they follow the default naming scheme, so you don't even have to replace files, you can just add your own.

For Stardew Valley, if you just want to change a portrait, you have to use a program to extract the png and yaml files from the xnb file, replace specific portraits in a spritesheet, and then repack the modified png file with the original yaml file into a new xnb file.

Not so friendly. Because of this, most people don't use their own custom portraits, they just download already-repacked xnb files that someone else modded. That way all they have to do is replace the xnb, which anyone can do with virtually no effort.

My main issue with 'designed for modders' is that games in this state tend to be heavily dependent on the modders to feel 'complete'. Quality is sacrificed and obvious changes never get made, because the modders will take care of it for them.

Anyway, I guess the big question is how important do people find mods for this game? If the game is just fine as is, that's great. If mods offer significant UI improvements (Something equivalent to SkyUI for Skyrim) then that'd be something I value, as I tend to prefer more info clogged screens than most people. But custom sprites and images and whatnot are not something I'm really interested in at all.

Not worried about longevity. If in 10 years, I want to play this again and I don't have my Switch around, there's worse things than paying another $15 then. That'd be a much smaller deal than paying another $15 right now because I decide that I'd much rather have the PC version over the Switch version after playing on the Switch for a couple of hours :D

Let's just leave it at everyone is different, I for one enjoy adding mods to games just to add something to them like extra followers or whatever, but it's not for everyone, so lets just leave it at that

CA supports mods, most do NOT add content, more are astetics and make you the equivilent of god (by that i mean cheats, and free items)

If that's even an option, then you're a lost cause.

What are you talking about?

He's just being a PC Master Race guy. Which is kind of a failed attempt as the Switch has that significant 'mobility' advantage over the PC. I'm actually a member of the Master Race myself, with my newest Sony and Microsoft platforms being XBox 360 and a PS2. But I do keep up on Nintendo products, partially because of exclusive games, but mostly due to the portability. Not even a laptop can compete with a 3DS or Switch in terms of portability.

Granted, I use to need portability a lot more in the past (Midnight shifts at the office with nothing else to do), but it's still nice to be able to bring good games anywhere I go. If I still was working until midnight in the office, then I'd definitely get the Switch version, but now my portable needs are more like "Waiting at the laundromat" or "Visiting my mom for the weekend". Relatively rare or short occassions.

I have both a ps3 and a PC, his argument that people who play consoles are lost causes is ignorant and bull crap

Or they're just being trolls :D Not worth worrying about it.

I read this while playing Stardew on my Switch! It's up to what you want, for PC the updates when come faster (I think) and mods (which are a side thing).
Pixel Peeper Oct 5, 2017 @ 4:34pm
Back when consoles had awesome games and computers sucked, I too was strongly on the console side.

Not anymore.

Pretty much anyone in the developed world has a computer. A developer has two options:

1. "Hey, you want to play my game? Just buy it and your computer will run it. You can easily mod it, too". :HappyMask::tgrin:

2. "Hey, you want to play my game? I know you already have a computer, but I decided that my game would only be playable on this other, highly specialized computer. So you'll have to shell out 300 dollars (instead of buying 20 entire games) and plug it next to your existing machines, and then I'm going to generously allow you to buy my game. Oh, before I forget: you can't mod it, and don't expect updates to come as quickly as they would for PC". :derp::claugh:

That second dev can seriously go ♥♥♥♥ itself.
