But I got several Trilobites in my first playthrough. They're not super common but they're not particularly rare either. You might simply have had bad luck. With so many artefacts to find, it's to be expected that you will have bad luck with at least one of them.
But people have been going over that code quite a bit. You'd think someone would have noticed something crazy like that. Between that and the human brain being highly disfunctional when it comes to interpreting luck-based data, I just wouldn't be comfortable proposing any hypothesis other than "bad luck".
I've had seemingly impossible things happen to me too. The last artefact I found on my completion run was the Rare Disc, and every single one of my other characters easily found one. Even a character I made just to test a Foraging profession and never dug a single artefact with; I happened to use her to test a pond for fish and she fished it out on her second cast.
Random chance. It's a ♥♥♥♥♥.
I think you are right, look into the "Better RNG mod by Zoryn4163" for more info on why things like this happen. Basically the random number generator used by SV is flawed and the handling of some of the data supplied by it is also flawed.
