Even early in the game melon is better.

If you only have the basics crops to sell with no vertilizer, 80g blueberry only manages 4 harvets for 200g.

Compared to 80g melon, which sells for 250g, and you can fit two cycles in, so 160g -> 500g.

If you are short on cash, 80g melon sells for 250g, buy 4 more melon, sell for 1,000g.

So you can turn each 80g into 1,000g just on melon alone in your first summer. The only thing holding you back is how many you can water each day.

Not that I dislike Melons, but it can't be a straight comparison.

It's true that you can use additional budget to plant more Melons during summer, while Blueberries need to be planted on the first day of summer or you'll miss harvests. That's a considerable advantage for the Melon.

However, if you want to sell it for additional budget, you will be required you to sell the initial Melon raw instead of processed because you'll need the gold immediately to fit in a second Melon harvest, which is a loss of 500g... maybe less if the Melon had quality. In addition, 250g would only buy you three more Melon Seeds, not four. And lastly, suddenly having more plants means you'll need to be doing more watering so it's not a pure gain.

On a strictly per-tile basis, Blueberries are worth 2,150g per tile and Melons are worth 1,340g per tile. You'd only use the Melons if you need to add crops mid-season; that's something that Melons can do that Blueberries can't.

Hops are, again, worth 5,040g per tile, though they too cannot be added mid-season because of the initial 11 days of growth.
YEah I think I was wrong on a few things.

But where do 2,150g and 1,340g come from???

Surely if you are in first summer you are basically going to be planting basic crop into unfertilised ground then selling it raw. 80g melon sells for 250g. You have time for two harvets, so its 340g profit per tile.

For blueberry you pay 80g and get 4 harvets which sell for 50g ea. So you only profit 120g per tile.

I guess by then you should get preserve jar? But I doubt anyone will have keg (Since you need to be farm level 8?)

Also I don't know if this is a historical thing, but in my version of the game blueberries only sell for 50g, not 80g. I guess this was an update at some point and many people are on old saves and grandfathered in?

In the first summer you're going to be Mining nonstop so you can make loads and loads of Kegs. Unless you've been neglecting your Farming EXP, you'll easily hit level 8 during the summer. The Strawberries alone, if you plant a hundred of them, will give you more than half the necessary EXP before summer even begins. That's without counting all the other things you'd have been growing in spring.

Given the access to Kegs around the middle of the summer, you wouldn't want to sell your stuff unprocessed.

Another disadvantage of Blueberries is that one plant will give you 15 Blueberries, which would take an absurd number of Kegs to process. Hops work because it only takes a day and a half to process each plant, but every single Blueberry takes a full week to process. It'd take a long time even with Preserves Jars (3 days for processing), but Jars are expensive and they're not as good with higher-cost fruit.

You want Kegs, and that means you want things that can reasonably be processed with Kegs.

That's why, during your first summer, you're going to want mainly Hops, and add Melons if you get the budget for them during the summer.

Blueberries... not so much.
Yes, Blueberries used to be worth 80g, now they're 50g.

I don't think having an old save would let you keep the 80g value. The game looks at the number in the game files and that number is now 50.

Because you can get them in your first year

Hops too, though, and they make Blueberries look like garbage.

No replanting

Yes, they both last the entire season without needing to be replanted.

The Hops just generate more than twice as much gold, for far less processing.
