There is a considerable amount of luck involved with what you hook, and some fish are more common than others. It hasn't been that rare for me to catch 8 of one type of fish and 0 from another even when it was possible for that fish to bite.

The factors deciding which fish you can hook are: location, season, weather, time and (in some cases) cast distance. The town river doesn't have the exact same list as the forest river, and the forest pond doesn't have the same list as the mountain lake.

Make sure you meet all the requirements, and then just keep at it to beat the RNG.

Most of the time, casting distance and deep water just makes you catch better-quality fish, not different fish. Not that I've really ever noticed; I always cast max distance, in deep water if at all possible.

This page has all the information you could want on fish.

The infograph at the end has missing information, but it's generally a good quick reference.

The wiki guide is pretty good.

I'm using this guide that tells me where and when to get certain fish... but for some reason the game only wants to give me Pike. Like.... I have only caught 8 Pike in a row and a lot of junk.

I have level 8 fishing, iridium rod, bait, and I'm using dressed spinners. Why can't I get any other fish? Is it just bad luck? Are fish tied to days of the week somehow? Today is Pike day in the lake or something? What's going on?

Only tips I have are make sure you're fishing at the right time (season and time of day), and the right spot. Eventually you should get the fish you're looking for, if you ARE following the guide.

I find the fishing infograph very useful, as it lists all the info you could ever want.

For the harder fish you need, I also recommend fixing dishes that increase your Fishing stats, if you have a kitchen already
Are you looking for CatFish?

None of those three fish are found in the Forest Pond.

You need to fish in the Mountain Lake.

Thanks for all the replies everyone.

So its currently the 23rd of summer and I've been fishing from 9am to 4:50 pm

I was trying to catch carp, bullhead and sturgeon in the lake south of the farm, which are supposed to all be available as long as I'm fishing in the day in the summer.

Right now my inventory is: 5 gold star pike, 11 algae, 6 pieces of junk and 6 gold star pike.

I'll give it a bit more time and update you all on how it goes. Thanks for reassuring me!

Yeah, what Trip said. But it's a good thing you caught all those pikes, it's good practice and you should have no trouble with other fishes. Gl on completing CC bundle.

for some reason i cant seem to catch any fish lol, for some reason i cant keep the bar on them, i also think the way catching them is kind of odd, the dev should have made it like all the other ways of fishing and up/down side/side was tension and reeling should just be pulling them in when the fish isnt moving as much :/

Here are some tips. First, never hold the bar. Continously click LMB. This gives you much more control than what you would've had if you were holding it down. Second, level up fishing. Go fish at the river on sunny days, or the ocean, and just catch fish all day. This'll level it up, and as your level increases, so does your fishing bar. Third, if you're a high enough level, you can purchase an irridium rod and some mods for it which'll make it easier to fish. E.g. trap bobber will keep fishes from moving as much while you're reeling them in (while they're in the green basically).
