Indeed, that's the best way to do it. He conveniently lives right there on the beach where the forage is, so you get to immediately free inventory space and get the gold right away (instead of waiting a day) by selling directly to him.

I dump them in the box by my house. I usually forage the beach in the evening after Willy has closed shop for the day.
