this can occur with cauliflower, melons and pumpkins if you plant them 3x3. dont know the exact percentage but it has quite a low % for it to happen. :)

They give a random number between 15 and 21. That's an average of 18, double what you'd have gotten otherwise.
Indeed. And while that's generally not a terrible drawback, it can be if you were hoping for quality to use them as gifts, or if you missed one of the other Quality Crops bundle crops and wanted five gold-quality ones for the bundle.
And AFAIK you get no EXP for harvesting a giant version or regular crops. Since nine tiles were converted and only valuable crops can turn giant, this could be a huge loss.
