HELP!!!!!!!!!!! I CAN"T FISH TO SAVE MY LIFE
So I've played a lot of hours into this game and I still suck at fishing, so much that I would rather buy the fish than actual fish for them. I want to enjoy this game so much more but I feel like I'm taking the easy path by waiting for each Friday and Sunday for the traveling cart, and then dissappointment when I get nothing... I'm using a mouse right now and I can't figure it out at all. I can't even catch a Saradine.... :'(

The minigame is simple enough. You control the green rectangle; holding the mouse button gives it upward momentum and releasing it gives it downward momentum. Casually tapping the button is a good way to control how much momentum you want to give or to take away. Just keep the fish under the green rectangle and wait for the progress bar to fill up. That's it.

It's actually very easy. Make sure you're fishing for easy things; Carps barely move at all and are pretty much guaranteed catches even for people who are awful at fishing.

Catching just a few fish will raise your Fishing skill. Higher Fishing skill will increase the size of your green rectangle, making it easier to keep fish inside it. It won't be long before the vast majority of fish become trivially easy to catch.

If you're still having trouble somehow, try eating +Fishing food. It'll increase the size of your green rectangle for a while after eating the food.

If you somehow still can't manage, just fish trash in your farm's ponds. You get a tiny little bit of EXP by doing that. You can get to level 3 that way and, if you find that you still can't catch easy fish, you can do Crab Pots until your Fishing level become yet higher.

But really, you probably just haven't given it a solid enough try.

Fishing is easy.

keep the green bar on fish... at the begining fishing is hard... when you level up it, it goes easyer... also try to eat food that increase your fishing level so it gets easyer

It does get easier the more you get used to it, I had trouble to begin with but once you get a hang of the mechanics you do it without thinking. Just do a little bit of fishing each day and try not to get mad at yourself for not catching the fish (like I did lol).
As others have said it does help to eat food that increases your fishing level so the green bar gets bigger.
It is frustrating and when I first started it I thought it wouldn't get the hang of it at all, was ready to give up, but I've now caught every single fish so it does get easier.
Stick with it, good luck :)

Another thing to consider is that all fish have varying levels of difficulty. Even at level 10 fishing, some fish are still difficult. If you are level 1-2 and you see a fish jumping up and down, and you lose it right away, that's normal. Some fish are not meant to be able to be caught with low fishing skill. Don't let those ones discourage you.

If you like mods, there's one called Teh's Fishing Overhaul[www.nexusmods.com] where you can config the difficulty of fishing.

In the config file, default is "BaseDifficultyMult": 1.0 but the mod comes with "BaseDifficultyMult": 0.85 which makes catching 15% easier. If you lower it to"BaseDifficultyMult": 0.5 fishing becomes 50% easier than default.

I don't know how the code works, but I suspect it's way, way more than that. A 0.5 multiplier doesn't normally convert into a +50% bonus.

For example, say you're playing some action game and your normal attack delay speed is 1, and you modify it to be 0.5, then you'll attack twice as often; in other words, a +100% bonus.

Also, variables all work differently. In that same fictional action game, say you're striking something for 12 damage and their armor subtracts 10 damage, reducing that armor by half (same 0.5 multiplier) wouldn't just increase your damage from 2 to 3 (a +50% bonus) or even from 2 to 4 (a +100% bonus), it'd increase from 2 to 7. That's a +250% bonus.

Additionally, there's usually a threshold for which tasks become trivial. Say you're doing something that requires you to score 100 points and you normally score somewhere between 75 and 90 points, reducing the requirement to 50 points instead of 100 (again, a 0.5 modifier) woudln't just double your chances of succeeding, it'd guarantee it.

This is one of the many problems that occur when you start cheating: it's hard to tell if you're just making something a bit easier or if you're destroying all balance.

ive noticed that if you use C to fish instead of your mouse, its easier. i used to hate fishing because i could never catch anything, but now its fun.

I did it once to complete the Community Center, but I don't see any reason to ever do it again. The "reward" for completing the Fish Tank section is... yeah. No.

It's one of the three bundles I recommended people skip once they've done a full playthrough.

Yeah, fishing really is easy. Hard as a new player and maybe somewhat difficult early but it really is simple once you level up the skill. Only hard thing are the legendary fish. I've cussed a few times trying to catch those fish.

Okay, I'm going to give you a step by step guide which works to increase your level initially by using crab pots.

1. Complete the Crab pot bundle in the Community Centre. This is easily done by foraging on the beach, checking the ♥♥♥♥♥ caravan, and getting a crab from the jellyfish legged stones in the mines.

2. Crab pots need bait. Your fishing level needs to be 2 to be able to buy bait from Willie, so whilst you're going to the mines to get a crab, befriend Linus with forage items. Once you have 3 hearts, strike up a conversation with him and he will teach you how to make Wild Bait. You need bug meat from insects in the mine and green plant fibre to make this. You may need to start the conversation near his tent.

3. Once you've got the crab pots, place them in a water source on your farm and put Wild Bait in them. It doesn't take long and once you reach fishing level 2, Willie begins stocking an improved fishing rod, bait for your crab pots and a few hooks.

4. Purchase the new rod, some hooks and a few Trout Soups from Willie. The soup raises your fishing level by 1. Each level you gain increases the size of your green fishing bar. You can increase from 2 to 3 using a soup.

5. Go to the Mountain Lake and fish there. It holds Carp which are slow and easy to catch. Getting used to how fishing works and increasing your level should now become much easier.

I hope this is helpful - go and enjoy!

A lot of fish don't move very much. Sometimes, Carps don't even try to leave your green bar and you catch them without doing anything.

If you're trying to catch Pike with level 0 or level 1 Fishing, then yeah, you're going to have a bad time.

Once you get your fishing level up enough to buy the Iridium rod, which supports both bait (reduced waiting for a bite) AND tackle (various perks), fishing becomes a lot easier.

I'd recommend the trap bobber tackle as it makes fishing easier in nearly all cases.

Someone mentioned fishing carp in the mountains. This is a good tip; carp are so easy you can sometimes catch them without touching the mouse at all. May as well put some crab pots in the mountian lake as well since you'll be visiting it frequently trying to level up your fishing skill.

Fishing ain't a bad way to make some extra money in the winter.
It took me awhile to get the hang of it, but then it gets easier as you get used to it plus as your character gains fishing experience. However, even now, I'm still hopeless at fishing with a keyboard and mouse, so I recommend trying with a Microsoft corded Xbox 360 controller.
