Besides, you don't have to kill all the monsters. Technically the only thing needed to progress in the Mines is to go down.
If you're having trouble with health, take a stack of salmonberries with you or something.
Or rather, if you look at all the data and come to the reasonable conclusion that you need one, then buy one. I do not recommend making decisions based solely on feelings.
Indeed, their priority should be getting to level 90!
Even if they encountered an infested floor, they could just skip it with a staircase. Worst case scenario, if they don't have the stones (heehee), they can simply climb back up 1-4 levels and try again. The 5-level brackets of the Mines make them quite convenient.
A fresh player with only a few hours or even 20 or so hours on one save file isn't going to have thousands of stone available. I'm gonna hit 100 hours soon and I barely have 3 k myself. Considering it costs 99 stone for a staircase and one stack gets you (at most) 9 staircases, it is kind of a huge waste of time. Even blowing up and mining everything is only going to yeild you close to 150-200 stone per visit. It would still take about a week to gather enough stone to progress rapidly via staircases. Better to save up your stone for skull cavern.
Oh yes, farming Stones is a terrible waste of precious time.
But if you're ten floors away from a good weapon upgrade, and you only need to progress five floors to get a checkpoint... in the unlikely case that you to stumble upon an infested floor, using a single staircase is perfectly fine.
But going back to the subject at hand, I still don't think it is worth farming the stone. He seems like he is already struggling against the monsters. A bought weapon that is slightly better might just be the edge he needs to get the next weapon.
Honestly dude, its your choice. We all have different play styles. You do what you want to do. All we can do is tell ya what we would do in your situation. And me? I'd just buy a new sword that isn't going to cost much, but will still give me the edge I need to keep going.
It might also be an idea to look at what other weapons can achive - the types you pick up on your way through the mines. There's one shaped like a baseball bat. If you hit the ground with this, it scatters those critters around you.
With respect to eating to surive in the mine, check the health values of some of the individual mushrooms available if you're growing them in the cave on your farm. You can also make health potions, but they can be overkill early on. You can hoe the ground in the mines and should find plenty of cave carrots. These are useful for replenishing health and energy, as are gold star forage.
With respect to a weapon or a horse, a horse will mean you get around quicker, but you can also use coffee (chances are you've a coffee bean or two from levels 40 - 70). Plus, what is the point of getting there faster if you're only going to die? I've often bought weapons to assist with reaching level 90. The money will soon be replenished. In addition, you could repair the minecarts - providing you're completing the bundles in the Community Centre.
How you play the game is up to you and it's your enjoyment at the end of the day and if you wish to complete all the Guild's monster killing list you're going to spend quite some time in the mines.
Wait, what?
AFAIK all hats are purely cosmetic.
