Can fruit trees grow when surrounded by tiles
I have crystal floor around some trees and I want to know if they will grow

The description states that they need the 8 surrounding tiles around them to be free.

I don't know if "path" tiles count or not, but I wouldn't risk it. There's no reason to have path that close to a tree anyway.

Paths do stop the tree from growing, yes. They also stop the tree from aging (improving the quality of its fruit).

I like to keep trees on the edge of my walkways

trees can still grow when they have tiles surrounding them. I did this when I grew a Tree fram that consisted of like 54 trees. It effects nothing (however don't expect all of the trees to grow at once unless you planted fruit trees).

This is false.

Are we still talking about fruit trees here?

Both the in-game description and the wiki specify that the 8 tiles around the sapling must be empty.

This is a topic about fruit trees, not regular trees. So yes, anything surrounding the tree will prevent it from growing.

If I had to guess, the false comment was on the quality part, though I don't know enough about it to say.

Yes, paths around fruit trees will prevent the tree from aging and thus producing quality fruit.

The thread title did specify fruit trees. Every response has been within that context. Except yours.

That's actually interesting to know, though I jam all my fruit tree fruit anyways.

Fruit trees can be placed right up against the unmovable default fences in the farm, they count as empty but don't collect grass/brances

That fruit tree fruits increase in quality over time is of limited use anyway.

The tree will produce normal fruit its first year, Silver-quality fruit its second, Gold-quality fruit its third, and Iridium-quality fruit its fourth. Since they are so costly and do not pay off quickly at all, few people will buy any (you could justify an Apple sapling for the Community Center) the first three seasons, and it takes a full season to grow.

In short, aside from potentially Apples in autumn, you will generally have no fruit the first year, regular-quality fruit the second year, and still only silver-quality fruit on the third year.

It's all kinds of ridiculous.

Oh, believe me, i know. I did one of my self imposed challenge runs (go until eval, CC route) where i only sold things from fruit trees.

Downright terrible idea. I only did as well as I did because I happened to find a spare diamond and someone asked for it on the quest board.

Ouch.

At most, I was considering a Fishing-only challenge (to spice up the Joja route when I finally get to it), and then only because I know it wouldn't be difficult at all.

Fruit tree challenge... I can't even imagine.

I've done three, but only one managed to finish the CC in time. It's a fun little thing, but most options require a ton of luck with the quests.

For reference, I made 104790g, missing 3 things in the CC (Duck Feather, Rabbits Foot, 25kg), only second house upgrade, not married (Had enough money, but winter and rain...) and made 3 candles on Grandpa's Eval.
