Where's the police force?
I just now relised that Pelican town has nothing in the way of authority besides the Guild? What exactly is going on here in the way of a police force?

The town might have to call the police in from Zuzu City, on the rare occasion the sleepy town populated by fairly reasonable and respectful people actually needs the police. I'd imagine most disputes just need a mediator at most, and most of the police-needing trouble would be from the rare visitor(s).

A line from Harvey states that he's 'not getting ends to meet' and 'could start accepting patients from neighboring towns', you would think that these towns are close by (you wouldn't want your trip to a doctor to be over 3 hours) and a phone call away from their police services. I'm only assuming this of course.
Yea I suppose that's one way of looking at it, I only really thought about it now thinking about those muggings you get at night when you fall asleep after a hard day of work and if you'd wind up calling that into the police.

There's typically very little crime in towns of 30ish people. Everyone knows everyone and, should a crime be committed, the list of suspect is immediately filled, and very short.

If need be, someone could be called from a big town (even if it's hours away) to collect more sensitive evidence and bring it to a lab.

The bottom line is, a police agent would pretty much never be doing anything, so it's not worth having one.

As people have said, there shouldn't be much need of police in this town, and for the little need there is, they can call in police from outside.

A small town like this, if it wasn't for pierre's shop and Joja mart, I'd expect the town to have a self service produce box instead.

I live in Sweden. Here we got a few placed where there is literally just a few houses around a road and then there is nothing else, isn't even a grocery store in those places. Why should they have a police station there? There is a police station located in nearby towns and cities that are much bigger. I don't believe a town with 34 people will care about having a police station there, just a waste of money to have someone sitting at a desk and rolling their tumbs all day. Having employees are expensive you know. I don't even know why Joja Mart even went out there in the first place.
There was that police man in Harvest moon.

But he was the son of the mayor and probably wasnt even a real policeman. Probably some corrupt nepotism with the mayor using his son to strongarm the local businesses into voting for him year after year.

Mayor Lewis doesnt have a child, and even if he did, wouldnt need to stoop to mafioso tactics to stay in power since he just sleeps around to get his votes.

With that said Lewis is also the only one who collects all your produce you ship, so he might just have a stranglehold on the food and goods being imported and exported from the town. I mean he needs his cut from what hes buying from you.

I would assume that Lewis is simply buying from you at a base price and exporting the stuff at a higher price.

Which I suppose is fair; essentially he takes care of transport, distribution and sales. We don't want to have to make phone calls to stores in the region in the area to negotiate prices, buy a vehicle and drive to each shop buying one of your products, or hire refrigerated trucks to do it, etc etc.

The alternative is that the people of Pelican Town eat a lot of mayonnaise. Like, a lot.

The reason Joja Mart opened a store in SDV is because it's trying to corner the market of fresh produce. The player's grandpa was competitor and they muscled him out. The Joja store could be running at a loss and still stay open for years.

@topic,
People have posted the points I would of made. It's just a really small town. If the neighbors farted, they'd be talking about it for weeks.

Well, I'd say you should just have one guy as a Sheriff for the town. No need for a police force. A tiny little office and a sheriff can do. Just somebody to help the town and find out who stole that money from you when you passed out. But really the only authority then is Linus.

I like to give Pam a bottle of mead just before we head off to the desert. Makes the ride more interesting.

As for police, farmer Stanley could have used police when Pierre caught him in flagrante delecto with the lovely Caroline and Farmer Stanley was without his sword.
