The Pomegranate is also used in the Artisianal bundle, and in the Enchanter's bundle. Pomegranete's sell for more than Apples.
Personallly, I think it's easier to complete the Fodder bundle and that gives you a free Heater, which in turn will keep one group of animals happy through the winter. The Enchanter's bundle on the other hand has some more esoteric items and will be more difficult to complete in general (A Rabbit's Foot and a bottle of Wine).
So, my suggestion would be the Apple tree, but it is a somewhat subjective decision.
You can get a single Pomegranate from the Traveling Cart, or even more easily from your cave should you choose the Fruit Bat option.
Personally I'd grab the Apple sapling, no contest... but if you think the 40g difference per day is important, you can always choose Pomegranate instead.
Hmm... interesting strategy.
Pros of buying an Apple sapling right away:
One of the rewards for giving out three Apples is the Heater, which would otherwise cost 2,000g. Then there's the rest of the Apples themselves (let's say 20 of them) which would yield 2,000g next season. The Apple tree essentially pays itself back a season later.
Also, while you don't strictly need an Apple to obtain the Greenhouse, a lot of the other items on the Artisan list aren't easy to get and you do need 6 of the items on that list to complete the Artisan bundle and get the Greenhouse. If you don't have an Apple, it's likely you'll have to either wait a longer time to get the Greenhouse or buy an item from the Traveling Cart for a few hundred (or even a thousand) gold. Having Apples in fall saves you that wait/expense too.
Con of buying an Apple sapling right away:
Simply put, the cost. 4,000g, early in Summer, a time when having an extra 4,000g to invest might very well yield far more gold than that.
Huh.
I suppose it all depends on how much gold you have in early Summer. If you don't have all the gold that you really want to invest, maybe it's better to wait. In that scenario, however, you won't be getting Apples for a long time.
I really hated having to wait for those Apples. I think I'm more likely to invest in a sapling.
