It doesn't quite work like that during festivals, when your inventory is unavailable.
You activate the object you want to interact with (in this instance it would be the soup pot), your inventory pops up, and then you have to choose an item.
If I remember correctly, choosing that item causes it to be picked up by the cursor, and you then have to move it to the pot to drop it in.
OP's inventory appears to be appearing over the pot, blocking access. Someone else reported a similar issue with the museum.
Maybe a resolution issue of some kind.
2. Click on the Pot (or press whichever button acts as right-mouse)
3. Click on item you want to throw in,
4. Done.
Unfortunately it seems that you have to drag and drop the item into the pot.
Some people have an issue where their inventory is covering up the pot (and some museum tables), meaning they cannot drop the item where it's supposed to go.
