"I haven't encountered any crows yet"
I made a scarecrow, but it hasn't scared any crows away! I read if you have a small farm (less than 20-30) crops, then seldom crows show up. Is that true?

When crows are scared away, you won't see them. It's only when they're invading your farm already that you might have a chance of catching them red-handed eating at your crops, which you don't want to see.

Just put them down, it's better to not see any crows than seeing them stealing ♥♥♥♥ off your farm and getting away with it.

Scarecrow protects roughly an 8 block radius circle.

You need a silo to make hay, get your scythe once you have a silo and start cutting grass

Hay is produced by using a Scythe to harvest grass while owning a Silo. Silo is a building you can purchase off from Robin that is to be placed somewhere in your farm..

You can right-click on them to see how many crows your scarecrow has scared off I think.

Crows are also random, you might sometimes get many of them trying to loot your farm while other time there might be none of them even if you purposely leave the farm exposed. I for one didn't even know that crows that eat your crops was even a thing until 2 in-game weeks after start.

What matters is that you don't want to take any chances, that's why scarecrows are there, to protect you from losing valuable crops to RNG crows.

Is there another Scarecrow nearby? If Scarecrows have an overlapping radius, one scarecrow might be receiving all the acknowledgement for the overlapped area.

That was the case with a plot of my own. It was a large plot with three evenly placed scarecrows. The middle crow got huge numbers, the right not as much, and the left supposedly scared none at all.

You better hurry and scare off that crow before it eats your crops!

I suggest using a scarecrow.

My problem is the fact it's just being useless. I got it so it would actually do something, but it hasn't done a thing

Make a larger farm then?

If you are not having problems with crows then what is the problem that you are having?

You make Hay while the sun shines of course.

No crows in over a month is definetly rare. Can't say I've seen it on any of my playthroughs. (Maybe you just don't have tasty crops? :P) Perhaps there is something to the small farm concept, where a lower crop count represents a 'smaller target' or a lower chance for crows to appear. Never read anything about it myself, but would make sense. I've always done like 90+ crops in first month (lots of parsnips to get farming lvl up for quality sprinklers).
