Complaints about the Hilltop farm
I picked hilltop farm because I thought it would give me an early jump on mining. Granted, it does have a little 'quarry' that randomly spawns rocks, ores, and geodes (they also get better quality but I'm not sure if this is based on time passed or progress through the mine).

The map is kind of annoying because it has a stream meandering through it, with a big rock blocking one bridge and a stump blocking the other (while this doesn't make the areas behind them inacessible, it does bog things down until you upgrade your equipment to clear them out). You can fish in the stream and in the pond in the southwest corner, but the actual volume of the water doesn't help at all, in fact its that much space not dedicated to growing/building. As is you have lots of cliffs/stairs being in hilly terrain and all, and the stream just makes it even worse.

I would be fine with this if there were unique upsides to make up for the limitations, but I find that your little 'quarry' that you get doesn't really cut it. Especially when you get to the point of unlocking the tram and quarry on the east end of Pelican town; now you can quickly get access to ores anyway and the few ore spawns you get on your farm aren't in the kind of volume to make it convenient (you're still going to be making the same number of trips to the mines/quarry anyway).

Personally, if I had balanced it, I would have turned to the cave. Make the hilltop farm's cave upgradeable via the Dwarf, who can help excavate more chambers you could use for storage/casks and improve the outpout of Fruit Bat/Mushroom farm by 15% per upgrade. Make the 'quarry' a connected section that improves spawn rate/quality as you upgrade it.

So now, you're limited on space outside, but can make up for it by expanding your cave and having a little Dwarf Fortress going on. The outside layout wouldn't need to be changed, only the 'cave' map.

Oh yeah? Play Riverland farm first then we'll talk about complaints, because that's the map I started my first playthrough with and oh boy....

Point is, Hilltop isn't really that bad.

I ended up placing my slime hutch on my hilltop quarry. I still get ores and geodes now and then so I feel I'm not missing anything.

For the rest, yes it is SO ANNOYING when you start out and you can only go one certain way around your farm at all.
