Keep fishing, try for perfect on easy fish such as carp. Make fishing recipes such as Dish-O-The-Sea, Fish Stew, Escargot or even buy Trout Soup from Willy to help you out.

As you skill up you get better rods and equipment (cork/trap floats etc.) and that bar gets bigger and bigger. You can also use crab pots to pick up a few skill points as well.

Watch the fortune teller on the TV. The higher your luck is the more you have a chance of getting a good fish and just getting fish in general and not seaweed or driftwood.

- Fish in the pond on your farm for your first level (the big one, not the little watering hole). All you'll get is trash, but it's a guarenteed 3xp per catch. At the start, you're more likely to lose fish than get them, which doesn't give exp but does drain stamina. Guarenteed exp is better, even in tiny doses.

- Use a controller if you can; it's much easier to control the movement of the bar.

- Timing of clicks is more important than number of clicks. Try to keep the fish towards the top of the bar because it's easier to send the bar up than bring it down.

- The river by Sam's house or the pond by the carpenter's have easy fish (Smallmouth Bass and Carp respectively) that are good for getting used to the mechanic after you get your first level.

- If all else fails, there's always mods.

Starting out, do this:

When the fish first bites, as evidenced by the sound and the '!', click one time. Only once. Then don't do anything until the fishing mini-game appears and the fish starts moving up the bar. Try to click only enough to keep the fish within the green bar. Just be patient. I found out after a little frustration that I was just clicking too soon and too often. Patience. Some fish will be nearly impossible to catch until your fishing skill increases and you get the better rod. But some you can catch with only clicking one time and then not again at all after the mini-game screen comes up. They will just sit right at the bottom of the bar and hardly move. Fish in steams and ponds. Ocean fish may be too difficult for you at first.

I'm at fishing level 9 and I've hooked the rare fish several times and I still cannot catch one of them. But I know I will once I get to level 10.

You using the cork bob and DoTS (or better, Fish Stew) recipe? I got all the legends first time starting at lvl 8. The only one I dropped is the Octopus (a non rare) - even at lvl 10. I switched to the trap bob to get it on the 2nd try.

The only advice I can offer for the legends - don't chase them up and down, the action always ends up being reactive and too late - preempt them and let them come up/down to you.

Install the Easier Fishing mod until you get the hang of it. Or permanantly.

fishing takes a lot of work and a lot of practice. It's probably the most difficult thing in the game to get used to.

But once you learn it, and upgrade your skills and rod, it's very lucrative
