Slime Hutch Help

So I recently built the Slime Hutch. I've got some slimes in there, some red, some orange, and alot of green. I know one benefit of the Slime Hutch is the ability to get purple slimes in there and then farm Iridium. My question is-how do I get from where I am now, with a rainbow of colors, to where all I have is purple ones? Do I have to breed certain colors? Is there a maximum slime limit so I have to kill inferior ones, and if so, which ones are 'inferior' and which ones are 'acceptable'?
In addition, I've been getting 'Petrified Slime'. Other than being just another artifact to donate to the museum and then sell the multiples I get of, I haven't found a use for it. Am I missing something with it?

You have to kill the inferior ones, yes... but you either have to breed red and blue to get purple, or go to the skull caves and get a purple slime egg for a pure purple.

THere's a limit of 20 for the slime hutch, then they start teleporting out.

All the slimes drop different things, look them up and find out which drops you want and breed accordingly.

I think so, it's been a while since I've bred slimes. You can also kill the blue mine slimes for eggs.

You can kill slimes to get eggs? I've killed over 500 slimes and never gotten a single egg.

You can, but the eggs only drop after you build the slime hutch.

One more thing though(you may not have seen this in the title because I added it after you started giving advice), what do I do with Petrified Slime? Is it just another artifact, or can I do somthing with it?

It doesn't do anything, unfortunately.
