There is also the fact that the bundles force the player to try out different things instead of just farming cash crops for maxium profit.
90% of the town is unemployed? I can guess in which political reality that sentence makes sense, but in the 'real' world of Stardew just about everyone of working age has a productive job:
Maru is a nurse
Harvey is a doctor
Pierre owns the general store
Penny is a teacher
Pam drives the town bus
Leah is an artist
Emily works at the saloon
Caroline and Jodi are stay at home moms
Clint is a blacksmith
Elliot is a writer
Robim is a carpenter
Lewis is the mayor
Gus owns the saloon
Demetrius is a scientist
Kent is a soldier
Evelyn and George are retired
Alex runs the ice cream stand
Sandy runs the Oasis shop
Willy owns the fish and tackle shop
Marnie sells animas and animal supplies
Shane works on his aunt's farm
Sebastian, Haley, Abigail, Sam are teenagers
Jas and Vincent are children
And your character is a farmer
The only two adult characters who are not working are the wizard and Linus, a mystic and a hermit, respectively.
90% unemployed????????? The town is crumbling? Other than the Community Center, the town looks pretty good to me and the people pretty happy and productive.
I personally chose not to use Joja in my first playthrough. The farmer can do all of this him or herself. Joja is just the easier way to go if making the money isn't an issue (either way it's not hard, but doing it without Joja can be annoying without some planning). I guess Joja vs. Pierre is part of the main conflict of Stardew valley, if it can even be called that. Lewis didn't want to hand the community center over to them in the beginning, and Pierre (that greedy little ********) loses customers because of them. That probably started most of the hate, and since Joja generally isn't cheaper than Pierre's, there's no reason to buy anything from there. That's what I've noticed, but I intend to take advantage of Joja's help eventually. After all, for a bunch of jerks, they're pretty helpful (unlike Pierre, who's just a jerk).
they're not teenagers, however, sebastian does freelance web design, haley is a photographer, abigail is taking online classes and sam works at jojamart, and then the museum when jojamart closes.
edit: for what it's worth, sam, sebastian, and abigail also try starting a band and have at least one successful show
Just like Walmart: minimum wage, little advancement, no benefits, drive the small, local businesses out of business. Good-going Joja Mart.
I stand corrected. Thank you. Haven't reached the Joja Mart closing yet, but looking forward to it.
