Cutting down trees not-on-the-farm...
What's the deal with that? You can't replant them manually, do they grow back over time? Or if I cut down anything not on my land, is it just clear-cut gone forever?
If they do grow back, how long does it take? (Actually, how long DOES it take a tree on the farm to grow from a seed/pine cone once planted?)

They'll grow back automatically, it does take some time. I don't know the actual time, but the process of growing is the same of your farm trees. It'll start as a seed and you'll be able to follow its growing steps.

Make sure you take the stump, not just the tree.

Yeah, as long as you cut down the stump the tree will grow back. Wild trees (maple, pine, oak) all grow fairly randomly. I've never timed, it but as I recall it took from a few weeks to a month or more.

You can also tap those trees.

Trees off of the farm will regrow. They don't have a set cycle like fruit trees or crops, so sometimes it'll take a while. This only applies to static trees though, and unlike trees on your farm, they will not produce saplings in the surrounding 3x3.

Debris like rocks, weeds and logs will NOT regrow, although they do replicate. If you leave a piece of debris sitting somewhere in town, it'll grow more debris around it over time. If you eliminate it completely though, it'll never come back (unlike on the farm where a little bit comes back every season). So if you're sick of the weeds and logs tripping you up in the forest, just spend a day clearing the debris and you'll never have to deal with it again.

If you're interested in this because you need to farm wood or tar/syrup/resin and lack the space, then you'll be interested to know you can plant trees off the farm, but only on land that can be hoed.
