Rusty Key??? How to unlock it???

Stupid question, but I don't really understand how to get the rusty key. I know you have to donate 60 artifacts to the museum, but there are only 42 in the game. So... what are the other artifacts? I've been trying to figure this out, but I just don't get it. Any explanations?

You can also donate Gems to the museum. They also count towards that

You can donate 42 artifacts and 53 mineral samples, for a total of 95 items. Collecting all 53 minerals is super easy if you spend enough time in the mines collecting (or buying, from Sandy's desert store) Omnigeodes.

Also, you get the key the next day, so don't worry about the game not notifying you of a new reward at the moment of your 60th donation.

On the subject, I'm halfway through winter year 1 and are a few away from getting there I believe. Should I have already unlocked the sewers by this point? Just seems finding the stuff to donate is getting more hard to come by.

Unlocking the Sewers is pretty much optional- there's nothing down there that you absolutely need (Though there is one heart-event cutscene that triggers down there, and there's a lategame quest after you've finished either the Community Center or the Joja Community Development Form that you need to have access to them for).

I'm not going to spoil what's actually down there, but it's nothing that you can't get elsewhere by other means, excluding the lategame quest.

Winter Year 1 isn't too late to have it unlocked, unless you go fast-paced and furious in the mines to get geodes and bulk up the Museum with Mineral donations you're not going to get it done very fast. Just keep your hoe on you and your eyes peeled for artifact spots (signified by the wiggling twigs/worms) and you'll fill the museum up eventually. Eventually...

I wasn't going to tell him explicitly what was down there but yes, there's a stardrop. If you're trying to get all of the stardrops it's technically 'necessary' but if you aren't going for all of them there are other places to pick up stardrops.
