Yes, there is, but only in caves such as the mines. However, if you choose the 'Wilderness' farm at the beginning, monsters will come out at night. There are three weapon types, daggers which have low damage and range but hit fast, hammers, which have huge range and attack but low speed and swords, which are balanced.

If you are looking for a combat oriented rpg this probably isn't the game for you. In all honesty even calling this an rpg is a bit of a stretch. When you get down to it the game is primarily a farming sim, there is combat but for the most part it's very basic and only in certain areas of the game which are completely optional.

Terraria is more combat oriented with building aspects. It's basically like Minecraft but 2d and more emphasis on combat and fighting bosses. But the only stats for your character in terraria are health and magic.

Underrail or dead state have decent combat while also having great combat mechanics.

Rune Factory is basically Harvest Moon but as Fantasy RPG - and as a series a lot better than Stardew Valley. I like the characters and stories way more and the newer games actually have fleshed out battle and crafting systems. They are only on console or 3DS, though, so you'd either have to emulate them or get a 3DS (which makes the most games of the series possible to play).
I'd recommend RF4 for 3DS or Oceans for PS3.

Terraria or Starbound, I guess? Terraria's like a mix between SV and Minecraft, from what I've heard.

Terraria is an amazing game just for the exploration and immense amounts of content, but it also happens to have more-than-complete crafting and building systems. It's frequently on sale and, despite the entire game being the price of a candy bar, it keeps getting free content updates many years after its release. The last update was actually to prep the game for more content!

It's not at all casual-friendly, however, and most of the combat is quite simplistic; it's the combat events (like invasions) and boss fights that are interesting.

Starbound was supposed to be "Terraria in space", but failed miserably.

In either case, the gameplay is totally different from Stardew Valley's.
