There's a chance that can happen, not sure which seasons though.

I believe if you chop it down it'll drop mushrooms, but thats all think I know, never had them my self, and I'm on year 4 on my best file.

In Fall, and it'll stay until chopped or struck with lightning. In Winter it'll turn into a stump and may regrow in Spring. It's tappable, too, so you can get more mushrooms from it.

About the tap part, do you mean you get mushrooms from the taps, or do you mean just honey or etc... ?

You get common, red, and/or purple mushrooms from the taps. Random one each time, I believe.

Don't chop it down, they're fairly rare. Just tap it and grow a mushroom forest.

They're mainly for looks - they're pretty useless.

If you put a tapper on it like you would any other tree, rather than get oak resin or maple syrup, you typically get red mushrooms, with a chance for other types. It's not very good money. They can drop tree seeds which will sprout into more mushroom trees, though. It's really only if you think they look cool, as they're a hard to get unique outdoor decoration.

Chopping them down gives a handful of mushrooms. They don't regrow, however - that'd be nice if they did...
