that said, try to keep the fish at the top of the green bar, not the center. this is because you can raise it with clicks faster than you can let it fall-naturally.
eat for any food that increases fishing. this will increase the size of the green bar.
i like to click in pulses (hold each click for 0.5-1.0 seconds or so), not rapid clicks. i have read others swear by fast-clicks, so i suggest trying both styles and see what works. I find fast clicks better for when they are at the top of the bar, as pulses will bounce off the top and push the green-bar farther down. pulses help me keep the fish at the top of the green-bar.
to reaffirm what the others are saying, focus on where the fish are easiest to catch (check the wiki) and just keep at it and you will figure it out.
my advice. good luck! (fishing made me rage-quit this game. took me a day to calm down and come back to the game, where i avoided fishing until i had to. then i just tried to stay patient and eventually caught every fish)
Most early fish, like sardines, carp and chubs shouldn't be too hard...
It's not based on luck. Just skill. So practice with enough trial and error.
Ignore harder fish and focus on easier ones (which will be carp). If you have access to the secret forest then fish in that pond. Carp are easy to catch; they hardly move at all. Once your skill improves and you can buy better rods fishing will get easier. In the beginning if a fish seems too difficult just let it go. It will be easier at higher skills and better rods so the "trick" I think is to level up on the easier fish.
Oh, and food, like trout soup which Will sells, that gives you a fishing skill buff can really help too.
The way I fish is via the rapid clicks other people mentioned. A shorter click moves the bar a shorter distance, and I find this makes hovering easier when a fish isn't moving much. I hold it a bit longer if I need to follow a fish a farther distance, when I need to move the green bar to the top of the fishing pole, or to slow down on a drop so that the green bar doesn't bounce off the bottom.
If you can get your fishing level up to 3 so that you can craft crab pots, you can also leave those around with bait and level up fishing without having to fish with a rod at all. They might take longer to level you up though, but I'm not sure.
This is a good place to begin raising your fishing level and yes, it does get easier with practice. I'd also suggest the following:
Buy Trout soup from Willy. This will raise your level to 1, which will help.
Let the harder fish go. Focus on easy catches.
Complete the crab pot bundle at the Community Centre and use them, with bait, to raise your level. You can buy bait from Willy once you're fishing level 2. A way around this is to befriend Linus as he will eventually teach you how to make a special bait. To make this bait you need to have explored the mines to around level 10/15. I have - in an earlier game - raised my level (using crab pots) from 0 to 3 by befriending Linus.
Upgrade your rod as soon as Willy sends you a message he has new stock in.
Other areas where you can catch easier fish are the Secret Forest and the far left pier on the beach - the one which adjoins where Willy's shop is situated.
Good luck.
