Mineral quality
I was watching a stream and I noticed in the player's inventory that there were quartz that were silver and gold quality. I've foraged and found several hundred quartz in my game and they've all been base grade. Why is that? I also researched on the wiki that frozen tears and earth crystals can be different qualities but i've never encountered them in my game. Does the geologist profession determine this? I picked miner btw

I think it's dependant on how high your mining level is. But I don't think Geologist or Miner professions have an affect.
I've had different grades of Quartz, but never of frozen tears or earth crystals that I can recall.

Hmm, my mining level has been 10 since year 2. It can't possibly be just bad luck. Also i only go mining on good luck days. Not sure if the luck multiplier even affects it tho.

Minerals have no quality levels. I'm not sure what you watched, but it's not in the unmodded game.

This is the fan wiki, not the official wiki btw. But notice the 3 values on the quartz (and frozen tear / earth crystal). The stream i watched was unmodded.

Ok, then try the official wiki?

Mineral quality was removed in 1.1.

Ok. So it's likely that the streamer was just playing the previous version

Was the streamer a botanist? (one of the lvl 10 foraging traits) (Botanist: Foraged items are always highest quality. )

I'm sure someone will say Quartz is not foraged even though it's picked up and not mined.
(nevermind, previous poster cleared it up)

Botanist doesn't effect minerals.

Quartz is not foraged. It's a mineral.

I'm reading on a different forum that players can and still are finding silver and gold star quartz in 1.1 with proof. Not ready to call this solved yet

If you can link where you got this information i'll be satisfied. I can't find it in the 1.1 changelog

I just fired up my game, I'm a botanist. I just picked up a quartz. No star level. So at the VERY least I can debunk the notion that botanist has anything to do with it.

I can't find it offically either, it's on the official forums though being discussed:

The other viewers in the stream were almost shaming me for not having found a better quality quartz, saying I'm just unlucky. Perhaps they were just trolling, and the streamer was just playing the launch version of the game. I'll leave it at that

I don't have another explanation, I'm well into Year 3 on my current playthough (and year 5 on my last), and have been level 10 at everything for quite a while, been to over level 50 in the skull dungeon, and have never seen a mineral with anything other than base quality. I have stockpiles of hundreds of different types of minerals.

That's more than just unlucky.
