Can I plant trees next to grass?
I know the tiles around the planted tree need to be empty, but does that include grass? If so, when can I have grass next to it without it affecting it? When it's fully grown or earlier?

I believe it has to be fully clear to have the fastest growth time

I assume we are talking about fruit trees.
I mean normal trees. So, no grass for fruit trees? Does that mean normal trees grow with grass around it?
I know about decorations and rocks. I'd just like to know because it's difficult to cut the grass around it without cutting the actual sapling.

For the fastest growth time or to grow at all?

Well from the Wiki for common trees it says "For maximum growth (in 10-12 days), common tree seeds are best planted in an area that is clear within a two-tile radius (at the center of a 5x5 square of tiles)". Common trees being the ones you cut down for wood: Maple, Oak and Pine.

For fruit trees from the Wiki "Fruit trees can only be planted in the center of a clear 3x3 ground area. They are planted directly into untilled ground. The 3x3 area around a fruit tree sapling must remain clear and untilled or its development will be hindered."

I would recommend looking certain things up on the wiki if you are stuck or unsure about almost anything http://stardewvalleywiki.com but be ware of spoilers.

Thank you, but I already thought so. I don't want to plant them next to each other, so it's fine.

I look on the wiki and read about trees, but it's not clear if grass causes it to stop growing.

I cleared the area of grass, planted a common tree seed and it grew a little overnight. But now grass grew back and I want to know if I can leave it. I planted many trees and I don't really want to go searching for saplings in grass to cut free.

Clear the area of grass first so it wont grow and expand into the area overnight, or plant in a clear space in the future or you will have to wait longer than the 10-12 days for them to fully mature.

I did, but apparently not enough for it to not grow back after 2-4 days.

You could always put up a fence or maybe a path to stop it. Personally I would have my trees and grass patches in different areas so as not to interfere with each other.

That would obviously be the most efficient solution, but I like the looks of trees and grass together. Besides, I want trees and grass all over my farm, so planting many trees and keeping grass away might be a hassle, especially if I want to chop down trees and re-grow them.

That's fair enough, I can appreaciate that :)

If time is not an issue then it doesn't matter, the trees will just grow slowly. If you want it to be quicker grow the trees first then let the grass spread around after.

Alright, I'll just keep that in mind for the future. Thank you.

I planted orange trees right next to my drop box. it took 2 or 3 years for them to grow to maturity. I know you're talking about regular trees, but i couldn't resist bragging about my orange tree 'children', hehehe.

With them taking so long to grow, I can't blame you for bragging about them. Good job on not giving up on them.

This is really late, but I want to point out that even though still not fully grown at a certain point the scythe will no longer take out a sapling. I am not referring to the "sprout" sized trees, but the age at which they look like mini adults, when they take a couple of swings with an un-upgraded axe. I don't know if grass impacts their growth to adulthood, but in my experience the effect it has on them reaching this "sapling" size is minimal at best, at which point I begin clearing out any grass that grows too close.

If you don't know what I mean by the varying tree sizes/ages test it on some wild trees (i.e. ones not in your arbor plan) first and you'll see what I mean without risking anything you care about.

I know this is old post, and I don't like necroing things, but its the first result when people google if grass effects tree growth, so I thought that despite the age this would be the best place to post my solution to this.
