Penny could just be the product of a broken home. Pam could have gotten knocked up by a dude who later left or was kicked out. Penny cloud also be from a previous marriage.
On the down side, she is a slob and doesn't make good use of her time. I think she drinks to take the pain of her life away.

Alcohol makes depression, much, MUCH worse because alcohol IS a depressant. In fact, alcohol can be the cause of depression when no depression was once occuring. Pro tip from a recovering alcoholic.
