Hope 4A learned their lesson from Exodus' failures for Metro 4.
I just read the 10-year anniversary studio update, and aside from my major facepalm on Metro having multiplayer in the future, I hope this rings true more than anything else:

"Using everything we’ve learned from the last 15 years, we’ve set our sights even higher"

I hope you've especially learned that "Metro" and "open world" don't mix well at all. Metro is a strictly story-driven franchise. Sidequests would only distract the player from the main story. They would be fine if the main focus of the game was the loot, meaning the more you'd play, the better chances you'd have of upgrading your loot. But it's not.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Metro games are supposed to be all about the story. But that's where Exodus failed the hardest, aside from being a godawful walking/driving/train simulator. The story was BAD. Really bad.

You go from trying to protect the Metro from a race of mutant humanoids and repelling a Red/Nazi invasion to spending over half the game running around to find medicine for your boring wife.

Any potential the original plan might've had (exploring outside of Moscow for signs of life and a better future) was completely obliterated the moment a forgettable side-plot was turned into the main focus of the story. And then you die like an idiot half frozen to death.

Seriously? Is that the best you got?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And then you have Exodus' second worst failure: at being an open-world game. Now don't get me wrong, I'd love to have more to do in-game as the story slows down long enough to come up with the next phase of the plan. But 4A clearly couldn't handle that.

80% of the entire playthrough is spent either walking, driving or riding the train. The open areas barely have anything to do in them, other than travelling to and fro the quest locations. Nothing to do, nothing to kill. Just complete empty wasteland.

During my first and ONLY playthrough so far, I was bored out of my mind halfway through the game, and I literally forced myself to finish it because I had paid good money for it. And I regretted even that because of the stupid ending I mentioned above.

So 4A are clearly not creative enough to handle the open world setting. So Metro should steer well away from that.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now, Multiplayer...do I even have to point out how out of place that is in Metro?

For starters, you couldn't possibly make it anything other than Human Vs Human, and that would become quite boring within 5 minutes. Go play Call of Duty if you enjoy that sort of drab thing.

And you can't have Left 4 Dead 2-style Versus, because there's no "special mutants". What are you gonna do, play as a Nosalis or a Watchman Vs human players, where every fight would last only a couple seconds?

Or turn the story mode into an annoying coop experience just because?

Enough with this stupid trend of wasting dev time on useless modes that don't belong in such games.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Metro games are supposed to be single-player STORY-DRIVEN titles. Stick with what you know.

Game is great for me. The first two had good stories, but we're utter ♥♥♥♥ to play.

This is one of my favorite games. I have done multiple play through's, 150 hrs on Steam version alone. Looks great and runs smooth once you get past the technical issues..

metro exodus was not a metro game imo. they can call it that all they want but it had none of the atmosphere, story or setting I enjoyed from the previous 2 games.

Its a spin off at best.

I wish they had gone with the original storyline they had planned instead of changing it last minute to what we got.

I have low hopes for metro 4, especially with the obvious content cut from exodus and resold as dlc.

It mixes VERY WELL. And i hope their next Metro game will have open-world maps too.
Quite the tirade.

Which best-selling games list OP on credits?

More than those that list you, that's for sure.

sad thread. i can't even elevate it to the status 'of interest'.
congrats op, but content=zero
if you'd actually played the game series then you would've understood that progress means change. Metro isn't about the tunnels, it's about the people, and the future. Grow, adapt, change. If your mindset is trapped in the tunnels, fair enough, but why write such a ridiculously long thread seeking support from a help community who don't care?

First of all, 4A games only said they are still working on how to implement multiplayer in the series, they will do it only if it makes sense in their world, they never confirmed Metro 4 will have Multiplayer, they just said they're still figuring it out. They even said not to worry, Metro 4 will still focus on Single player story driven experience.

Secondly, Exodus is amazing! I really liked the story. Yeah sure its different from the previous two games without the claustrophobicness, the danger lurking in the metro and all but the franchise had to evolve at some point. They needed to attract more players to their game so they opted for the sandbox semi open world instead of a complete open world. They are spending more resources and time to deliver a good looking game, what use is it if the player base is less, they need to make back their money. So they went bigger. Yes even I miss the setting of the first two games but I agree in the direction they went now.

Finally, Exodus didn't fail. It was hugely successful. A lot of players and critics loved the game. It made good money on Epic and even more when it came to Steam. On steam, it sold more than 200,000 copies in the first 2 days of release. Now 4A games has enough money to make Metro 4 and another brand new IP. I am happy for them.

(this might stir the nest, folks)

You care enough to flap your clueless gums.

Progress means improvement via evolution, not regression.

Story = fail
Immersion and atmosphere = fail
Gameplay = fail
World design = fail

Progress...where?

And if you knew anything more than just using a word processor, I wouldn't have to spell it out for you.

Personally the only thing I would agree on is that Metro series does not need a multiplayer. For me Metro is always about the breathtakingly immersive singleplayer experience which does not need a tacked on multiplayer at all, so on that I do agree.

As for the rest however, I highly disagree that Metro Exodus has failed. Just before buying Metro Exodus, I played through both Metro games... and Metro Exodus was such a huge step in the series in all of its aspects. The story for me was phenomenal, emotional and quite jaw
dropping. A story that tackles so many aspects of life; humanity, survival, life, family, love, loyalty and comradeship.

I completely immersed myself into it and listened to every single line of dialogue there is and it became easily one of my most favorite games of all time because there is nothing about Metro Exodus to me that feels out of place or like something is missing. It was perfectly executed and my experience with it was incredible. But naturally that's just my opinion. I love every single Metro game and I hope Metro 4 is just as good and even better ^^

And all from a lvl 0 private profile, no surprise there.......... I love how people do that and not from their real profile. Hmmm ....

For me this game is great! I played all Metro games and I don't mind an open-world here at all. I also like the main story here and those 2 endings. Side quests won't move you away from the main story. (It's not like we are playing Assassin's Creed games and that type of side quests)

Multiplayer in the next one? No, I don't need that for sure.

@OP
The only thing I agree with you is that we disagree. And keep in mind that what you posted is your personal taste and you don't need to convince anyone here that you are right. You can't be right, because it's just your different opinion, your own taste.

EDIT:
Oh, I forgot!
The only thing I miss in this game is Artyom's voice in the dialogues.

You just dont like the metro games, here we dont have a single sidequest that distracts you from the main story, the narrative was really good and you just need to pay attention to understand it, since metro 2033 artyom has been looking for a way to get out of the metro tunnels and go to a better place. The gameplay is excellent, even better than previous games, at least here you can kill all bandit and thugs (except saul) without any issue and still get the good ending.
