These settings made my game run smoother
Was having trouble with stuttering as I came back for my 3rd playthrough or so and dug this up from a reddit thread. Reposting here for any struggling gamers.

Things it doesn't mention is disabling steam cloud saves, these can often corrupt save files. Generally this feature is just a mess so I'd disable it for everything by default. Also going into task manager and setting high priority for the program. Lastly using Dx11 always as it seems dx12 is just buggy with this game and doesn't work right.

I didn't bother with firewall (just play in airplane mode if it's an issue anyways), the biggest change for me was the nvidia 3d settings. Disabling the nvidia overlay also made a noticeable difference once I did the former as well. With these changes I'm able to run high quality, max resolution, advanced Physx, 16x texture filtering, and I'm on an old as piss laptop with a 960m card - running way higher than I "should" be able to (should be fine as I can run other similarly demanding games smooth that are actually optimized correctly)

That said if you're not a nut about graphics, the game still looks great and will run much easier by changing from high quality to medium or even low, the most impactful to gameplay and the ability to see things seems to be texture filtering and resolution, which I try to keep at their highest settings for those far away enemies, better making out figures in the dark, or hidden details.

Recommendations by Deep Silver:

Please launch the game with the option 'Run as Administrator' by clicking the MetroExodus.exe rather than the Windows App.

Proceed as follows:
\- Right mouse button on the program icon .
\- Then select Properties.
\- Click here on the "Compatibility" tab.
\- Activate the option "Run program as administrator".
\- Click OK.

If the problem persists, please check if your anti-virus software or your firewall is blocking the game.

Occasionally due to updates or system configuration anti-virus programs have been known to interfere with some games.

Because of this, we recommend setting up your anti-virus to make sure it is not conflicting with the game. Please add Metro Exodus to your exceptions. How to do this will depend on your anti-virus software.

Please do also check your Windows defender, as most users forget about the Windows Defender.

This user's feedback might help, too:

*"When I turned off only the firewall the game was able to launch. After enabling it again the game was able to launch with the firewall fully enabled."*

If you have GeForce Experience In-Game Overlay enabled and/or GeForce Experience Highlights enabled, please disable both features, since they seem to be causing a lot of trouble. Afterwards restart your computer and try launching ME again.

If  you have an NVIDIA graphics card, we recommend that you also perform the following optimizations. Note that not all these settings may be available to you.

1. Open the NVIDIA Control Panel and navigate to Manage 3D Settings
2. Select the tab Program Settings and find Metro: Exodus. If you can not find it, click on Add and try to find it here. (try running the game first and close it down again if you can not find it)
3. Set Maximum pre-rendered frames to 1
4. Set Monitor Technology to G-SYNC (if applicable)
5. Set Multi-Display/Mixed GPU Acceleration to Single display performance mode
6. Set Power Management Mode to Prefer maximum performance
7. Set Texture filtering – Quality to Performance
8. Disable Vertical Sync
9. Enable Threaded Optimization
10. Set Preferred Refresh Rate to Highest available
11. Apply the changes and navigate to Adjust desktop size and position
12. Check the checkbox Override the scaling mode set by games and programs and click on Apply.

Let’s start optimizing the Metro Exodus game now. These are the best standard settings, so you should probably tweak them to your liking a bit. We aim to get a steady 60FPS at 1920×1080, 2560×1440 or 4K.

1. Launch Metro Exodus.
2. Open up the video settings.

Now the recommended settings depend on which type of PC you have. As this is a single-player game, you don’t need to put all the settings down in order to maximize FPS like you would on first-person shooter multiplayer games. We want the best visuals possible for our system without sacrificing too much FPS.

We hope that this will help to resolve your Issues, otherwise please try to start the game from Nvidia Experience since lots of users reported that this step finally resolved their issues.

Some users have reported that their problem was solved by removing the NVIDIA GeForce experience software.

Please get back to us with a feedback, even if you succeeded to play the game, as it's very useful for the next patches and other users experiencing the same issues.

Thanks in advance!
