Infrared Laser Attachment- Useless?

Hey everybody,
I've been having a blast playing Metro this weekend, and recently I came across the "Infrared Laser" attachment, which is like the other lasers in the game but is only visible through night vision (NV Scope/Goggles/etc). I think this is a very cool concept, but what is the point of this attachment in terms of functionality? Seems to be a downgrade from the red laser you can get near the beginning of the game, since enemies already don't seem to react to seeing a laser (even despite shining them directly into their eyes during stealth). Am I missing the intended feature of this attachment?

But why not just use the red or green laser? They work around the clock and can be seen without the goggles.

perhaps on higher difficulties red dot would be spotted? not sure.

I believe this is the most likely reason, I am currently doing a play through on Hardcore but I plan on going back for Ranger Hardcore, it might be the case where the laser is visible to enemies on RH.

playing on hardcore ranger, can confirm that the laser attachment is invisible to enemy ai.
