I figured out that turning off TAA broke the game, not the fov.

Ah so it does use the stupid vertical fov like the last games.
You'd think the devs would implement a way to change fov in game
it's too narrow
and editing config file makes arms look ugly
They never have. And they never do either. Baffling thing really.
The game runs fine in terms of performance, but if you think blurring the game into illegibility 'looks fine' then you may need to get your eyes checked.
As far as FOV goes, the default settings are totally busted on widescreen, uncomfortable at typical pc viewing distances, and so narrow that they induce motion sickness for a lot of people.
If you are on a regular aspect ratio monitor sitting at longer view distance, and don't suffer from motion sickness - good for you; this fix is for everyone else.
